STRUCTURAL MOMENTS...

Greetings!

When does the design of a building end and construction begin?

I believe that design and construction are and should be inseparable. Fundamentally, architects and engineers must consider and take responsibility for a project's constructability. Contractors, on the other hand, must be equally responsible for the design implications of their decisions during construction.

A building is the product that architects, engineers or construction professionals are selling to the client. What will the owner get out of that building? I see a growing demand for performance based design and construction not only in the short term but also for the lifecycle of the building. The quality and efficiency of documentation and delivery methods are very important in achieving those goals but they are not the product. Thus, our value proposition should not emphasize means and methods but rather should focus on the end result.

Mohammed ThomadDo you agree with my assessment and see the same trends?

FOCUS ON: STAFF MEMBER HIRING ANNIVERSARIES

Happy Anniversary! Two of our team members mark their four-year hiring anniversary this month. Eric Kelly and Mary Hengst both joined our firm in August of 2007. Over the years, they have grown to be a valuable asset in their commitment to providing our clients with excellent services. Please join us in congratulating and recognizing them for their support, contributions and loyalty over the past four years.

In the brief notes below, Eric and Mary articulate their thoughts and reminisce about the days since joining the firm.

A note from Mary:

It's hard to believe that it has been seven years since my family and I moved to Las Vegas. A Southern California transplant, I moved here during the housing boom in 2004. It has been fascinating to watch the building boom and bust. I have been working for THOMAD Engineering for four years now and have witnessed a dramatic change in business. Like many companies in design and construction, there have been sacrifices and cutbacks. I believe the strong, reputable and best companies will survive. Las Vegas will be fine, and it is a great place to live. I love living here and encourage everyone to remain optimistic about the future.

A note from Eric:

When I began working at THOMAD Engineering, I was also starting another exciting chapter in my life: college! When I first started my education at UNLV, I was pursuing a degree in Architecture. Working at a Structural Engineering firm was extremely beneficial to my education, and continues to be, even after having changed my major to Landscape Architecture and Urban Planning. Now in my senior year as I prepare to graduate to the next step in life, I am thankful to have been a part of this team of great people and great experiences. I look forward to whatever the future holds!
