Focus on Sustainability

JoistsThere is a common misconception that little can be done by structural engineers for sustainability.

We believe knowledgeable structural engineers can significantly contribute to achieve truly sustainable designs by closely collaborating with their colleagues in other disciplines. Important decisions can be made during the design phase of a project which will have long lasting effects that will be seen well beyond a structure's life.

A few actions structural engineers can take to make structures sustainable, stronger, and more economical are as follows:
  • Designing element connections to accommodate ease of deconstruction and reuse of framing members.
  • Specifying concrete mixes which take advantage of reusing byproducts or waste materials.
  • For wood framed structures, specifying the appropriate lumber certifications and avoiding products which use certain harmful bonding agents.

All of the above actions and many more can be taken at no extra cost, and may reduce cost overall. THOMAD Engineering is happy to announce our involvement in the sustainable structural design of a LEED project, featured in the article below.

Lexus of Henderson

THOMAD Engineering is currently working on a new luxury automobile dealership and showroom for Lexus of Henderson located in Henderson, Nevada. The project is in the design and permitting stage and is aiming for a LEED Gold Rating.

Our LEED certified staff are closely working with the project architect and professionals in all other disciplines to implement sustainable design techniques to achieve the Gold rating. For the Lexus brand, the way to perfection is through attention to detail. We took that to heart in designing their premier store. The building permit is expected to be issued by the beginning of August 2009 and construction will begin shortly after.
