It's Back To School, the most wonderful time of the year. YouTube Video 

 

Now that all the kiddies are back in school, we get to help them with their homework. We have to remind them that math, indeed is important. "You will need it for quickbooks because you can't afford an accountant."

 

We have to teach them how to deal with bullies. The same kids that steal your milk money, knock you into lockers, and cut in front of you on line, will be the adults you will be working with. They will steal your ideas, take credit for your results, stab you in the back, and criticize you in a company meeting...

We have to encourage them to participate in drama, or sports, or music, or other events to increase their social skills. Plus it's a good way to meet boys or girls...

 

Always be networking. There is nothing better than a face-to-face meeting.

 

One of my pet peeves is the status update, "Summer is over." For crying out loud, summer ends on September 23. The Little League Baseball World Series is in full swing and the Cubs still have about 30 games to lose.

 

Summer is not over. One guy posted he's getting his hot tub ready for winter; another guy commented, "Call me." That was creepy.

 

Summer is not over. We are still mowing the lawns and the flowers need watering. We can still bike, hike, run, and kayak.  

 

Dude, the pool is still open; stop by for a swim.

Networking: College Student vs. Business Leader    

 

Back in the day, we had dorm parties and frat parties ~ very efficient way to catch up with friends and meet new people. We would occasionally cross paths on our way to and from class (or at the pub) and catch up: How YOU doin'?

 

Now we have networking and social media. Networking events are an efficient way to catch up with colleagues and meet new people. Social media supports our desire to keep connected: e-blasts, mobile uploads, tweets, status updates, and profile updates.

 

We know who went where on vacation, who got a new job, and other cool stuff. We get invited to fund raisers, workshops, ribbon cuttings, and other great networking opportunities to meetup with someone. 

 

We meetup with someone new to determine the opportunity for building a relationship. 

We start building our network with the folks we know, like, and trust.

We give referrals to people in our network who are ideal leads for colleagues.

We provide support for people in our network who are struggling. 

We do business face-to-face with the folks we know, like, and trust.

We build long term relationships with people we know, like, and trust.
