1. Chamber of Commerce Business after Hours.
Tried and true. They always net a few contacts and renew old friendships. NOTE: Often at a business networking event
everyone's trying to sell -- you have to able to wear either buyer or seller
hat, and listen for your opportunity.
2. Chamber of Commerce event. Coffee
Connections, advisors meetings, young professional's network, women's network,
old guy network (checking to see if you are paying attention), committee
meetings, golf outing, annual dinner. The Chamber of Commerce is your best local networking resource, IF you
take advantage of it. SUCCESS HINT: Be a committee chair. (I get to choose speakers for one committee. Guess who the June speaker is?)
3. A networking club or business organization where
solid business contacts belong and participate. In Naperville it's places
like Naperville Leads, Chicago Business Executives, LeTip, and BNI. The more
you attend, the more you get known, grow, and succeed in your market.
4. A
civic organization. Knights, Rotary, Kiwanis, Elks, Moose, and Lions. Oh
My! Any civic animal will do. SUCCESS HINT: Be a leader not just a member. BONUS:
Some places you get to sing before lunch!
5. Get involved with a charity or
be a community volunteer.
6.
Trade shows. Industry specific shows, general business shows and Chamber
expos are excellent places to get known, get sales, and get ahead. SUCCESS
HINT: Be a seminar presenter, not just an attendee.
7. Coffee networking. Invite
a prospect to coffee. Then invite a prospect for him or her. NOTE: Bryan McDonald has a morning meet-up at
Einstein's Bagels. He has met three different connections every morning for
about eight weeks. I have to step it up in this area.
8 Parents of your
children's friends. If you have a big prospect whose kid plays ball in the
same league as your kid, you'll have a big advantage to make him a big
customer.
9. Neighborhood homeowner's association/condo association. Get
to know your neighbors and who they know.
10. Health Club. Network and exercise. Get wealthy and healthy. Kick your client's butt on the racquetball court but don't forget to thank them for their business.
10.5: The Saddle Up Saloon. Invite
your clients to this great venue inside the old Spaghetti Factory. Learn some
line dances, watch some crazy people shake their booty and get to learn
something new about your clients.
THE SECRET IS: Being ready to network when
you get there. Success starts with showing up prepared. Know who you want
to connect with and be ready with your quick pitch. "I'm Joe Izzo from Clix
