Who is Ron Van Clief ? The Black Dragon !

  • Trained by Malcolm X's bodyguard.
  • Served 14 months as a Marine in Vietnam.
  • Created his own style of martial art, Chinese Goju in 1971.
  • Achieved Black Belts in 12 different martial arts.
  • 5 time World Champion (karate/kung fu)
  • 15 time All-American champion .
  • In 2002 he won the All-American karate championship aged 60.

Star of numerous Hong Kong action movies, and he is just one of the many extraordinary black stars highlighted in this film.

In the 1970's many black men in England and America took up martial arts as a way of defending themselves from racist attacks from white men. With the rise of the Kung Fu movies  there was a gap in Hollywood and Hong Kong  for black people who had those skills. The film also explores the link between Kung fu and Hip Hop. Black women develop breast cancer two decades earlier than white women, the first UK study looking at the differences suggests. Basic information that would help black  women live longer and suffer less is absent from the maintream.

Researchers, based at the Institute of Cancer and Cancer Research UK clinical centre at Barts and the London, also found that survival was poorer among black women with smaller tumours. In addition, their early findings suggest that tumours in the younger black patients were click to read more

At a time when Red Tails is still being blocked from British cinemas it is a wonder this film was ever made. Filmed in 1957 just two years after Rosa Parks bus boycott. This is a

blockbuster film with two of the biggest black stars of that decade  Eartha Kitt and Sidney Poitier arguing for African freedom. The Will Smith and Beyonce of their day at a time when most Africans in America and elsewhere could not even vote. With more than a passing reference to Ghana's recent independence. This is essential viewing from a cultural legacy and propaganda perspective. The film was funded by the Presbetarian church at a time when black christians in England were being thrown out of local white churches.
Introduced by actor Tim Reid, with a short from his Legacy Media Institute
The National association of Black Saturday Schools is trying to register NABSS as a Community Interest Company but Companies House are refusing to acknowledge the use of the words "National" or "Association" unless letters are sent from organisations that recognise NABSS as a legitimate representative for Black supplementary schools or have in the past worked with NABSS. 'A big THANKS for making my birthday special and memorable. On  Wednesday 22nd June I travelled to London from Bedford for the day.As a birthday treat, I booked the 6pm City of London Walk through St Pauls. Our guide was very clear and provided many examples of our culture and history which is displayed all around us which we're unaware of. The guided walk and talk was such a enlightening experience, I'm making a photobook from the several pictures and notes made during the tour. The  BHW Team are providing such a wonderful service, through your website, walks, talks and events.' Lupus Street SW1

$6.00 pay on the door first come first served

Your feet mirror your general health but they are often severely neglected compared to  eyes, teeth and hair. Such conditions as arthritis, diabetes, nerve and circulatory disorders can show their initial symptoms in the feet  and 'minor' foot ailments can be your first sign of more serious medical problems.

There are approximately 250,000 sweat glands in a pair of feet they excrete as much as half a pint of moisture each day. There are times when you're walking when the pressure on your feet exceeds your body weight, and when you're running, it can be three or four times your weight. The 52 bones in your feet make up about one quarter of all the bones in your body. Women have roughly four times as many foot problems as men.

Get  the answers you need and find out how you can prevent problems  with headaches, backaches, pregnancy and circulation problems by simple footcare with Chiropidist Joanne Williams-Roberts. Ms Roberts operates out of Dermacia Pharmacy at 260 Upper Street Islington and can be booked for private consultations on 0207 359 1126. He will speak about ways to engage 'disruptive' and 'hard to reach' pupils from a teachers perspective and what parents can do to revitalise their childs'  interest or performance in school. He will also share what battles he fought to make sure the children in his classes achieved academic excellence and strategies to combat institutional discrimination. We will be having regular screenings at this luxurious and intimate restaurant so not only can you enjoy the best in black cinema but you can also sample the delicious weekend buffet. This months film, White Scripts.. As a young boy, the filmmaker, Johnathon Gayle  loved comic books and the escape that they provided. However, as a young BLACK boy, his ability to truly escape was limited by the fact that many of the heroes were White. This documentary critically examines the earliest representations (1965-1977) of Black masculinity in comic books and the troubling influence of race on these representations.  Through interviews with prominent artists, scholars and cultural critics along with images from the comic books themselves, it becomes clear that the Black superheroes that did eventually emerge are generally constrained by stereotypical understandings of Black people and Black men in particular. The documentary addresses more than forty years of representation of Black men in comic books. It addresses the following topics within the broader theme

* A general history of early Black male superheroes

* The manner in which these characters are generally constrained to the "ghetto"

* Evidence of the "Black Buck" stereotype

* The manner in which their powers are limited and qualified in comparison to White heroes

* The influence of Blaxploitation films on these representations

* The impact of racism, racial thinking on the publishing and distribution of titles featuring Black heroes

* The influence of ethnicity on the creation of superhero characters

* The distinction between African and African-American representations of Black superheroes

Plus Q and A with comic collector, producer of The Real Mcoy, Star Trek distributor, and creator of the new African Superhero animated series Spirit of the Pharoah Terry Jervis !

Red Tails: subjected to race discrimination in 1945 and again in 2012 in the 'post racial' age of Obama
The previous edition (click to view)  listed several movies that had made less money  than Red Tails but were already released in UK cinemas whilst Red Tails does not even have a UK release date. Red Tails is the true story of an all black fighter squadron of World War2 . It has an all-black cast, was refused funding and distribution by Hollywood and was only made because George 'Star Wars'  Lucas, whose idea it was ,had enough money to personally fund the production and subsequent promotion/distribution. It was released in the USA on 20 January and  debuted at number 2 in box office. By way of comparison... Rampart:

Box office debut at number 2, already in UK cinemas. This Means War: Two white spies chase after the same white woman . Released in USA on 17 February. Box office debut at number 5, already in UK cinemas. Wanderlust white couple go on the hippy trail and fall in love. Released in USA on 24 February. Box office debut at number 8. parents are away. No box office proof of earning power but the film opened simultaneously in USA and UK on March 2. It is presently at number 2 in the US box office. In the 1970's When 'black' Melvin Van Peebles complained that racism blocked his movies he was dismissed as a 'black radical with a chip on his shoulder'. In the 1980/90's when 'black' Spike Lee complained bitterly about Hollywood blocking positive black films he was told he was 'whinging and did not know what he was talking about because the only colour Hollywood saw was green'
When 'white' George Lucas pointed out that despite his fame and influence Hollywood refused to produce, then refused to distribute, his true story of black male war heroes no one  accused him of being 'uppity' or having a chip on his shoulder.
red tails
Red Tails (cast)
true story of black World War 2 heroes who fought Hitler and US racism.. no thanks
The actual reasons given to Lucas for the lack of investment were  'because the story had no white heroes in it' and  'we would'nt know how to market a film with an all black cast'..Well how is it that Big Mommas house 1,2 and 3 got produced and distributed  thrice ? Does Hollywood have a limited view of black manhood so its ok if they wear  dresses and clown around but if they're saving the world then thats 'not acceptable' ? If the only colour Hollywood really saw was green then how is it that Red Tails, which opened at number two in US box office has still not been released here while movies that made less money have ? What does this say about censorship, conspiracy and the deliberate limitation of positive images of African people ?
