"Winner Takes All" has
strong ties to the plains and prairies of Oklahoma, where artist Loppy Lazar
was born and raised. This fired clay sculpture with acrylic patina depicts two
struggling buffalo with remarkable realism and majesty, skillfully reflecting
the power and passion of nature's creatures. Inspired by Lazar's own photographs
and firsthand memories, this award-winning piece exemplifies her technical
expertise and unbridled creativity.
Recalling the two
buffalo battling for rights to lead the herd, Lazar states, "I have always been
inspired by the immense power and passion in these battles, and amazed at the
sense of fairness and respect with which these battles end. The fight
is fast and hard-hitting, but when blood is drawn or one has 'lost
the round', they part quietly with majesty. The loser roams away, while
the winner is quick to begin to reap his rewards."
When asked what this sculpture represents, Lazar said, "It's about the
strength of the people of Oklahoma." As Lazar recalled the many
instances of seeing the gentle buffalo, she couldn't help but be moved and
inspired by the strength they exhibited during rutting season. She concludes, "there's an awful lot of power in the buffalo,
but it's usually a calm power."

Loppy Lazar will be available during a museum reception at the von
Liebig Art Museum in Naples, FL, beginning at 5:30pm, Friday, January 22, 2010. The reception
is open to the public for $10 per person and catered by Whole Foods.
Art enthusiasts and
members of the public may view this sculpture firsthand by visiting the
Members Gallery at the von Liebig Art Museum. The museum is on
Park Street, one block South of 5th Avenue in the downtown area. Viewing hours
are Monday to Saturday, 10am to 4pm, and Sundays, 1 to 4. This exhibit
will run through the end of February.

My artistic creations rise from my passionate
appreciation of life, in all its forms. I am compelled to grab these moments and
hold them, expressing them in my sculptures and paintings. For me, there is
always a point in the creative process when this feeling of life and passion which
I am pushing and pulling into the clay or paint begins to push back to me, returning even more energy than I
have invested, taking on a life of its own.
