President's Message
As this is my final President's Message, I would like to extend thanks to Chamber Directors, staff, and those members of the business community who made my job a challenging but rewarding one. The Chamber continues to be a strong voice in the community and I am proud to be a part of it. We've had elections at the Chamber and I am pleased to announce the 2010-2011 Board of Directors. Joining incumbents Judi Auger, Kevin Hargreaves, Jason Jesmer, Jacques Perreault, Doug Randlett and Guy Willis are newly elected Directors, Mike Galvin, Joey Gault and Frank Holiday. Re- elected for a second term were Directors' Joe Gunn, Paul Lefebvre and Rick Shaver. I'm also pleased to announce that Rick Shaver, Publisher and General Manager of the Seaway News has been elected President of the Chamber. Joining him on the Executive Committee are 1st Vice President, Doug Randlett, 2nd Vice President, Paul Lefebvre and Treasurer, Joe Gunn. With the new President in place, I become Past President and Chairman of the Board. The Chamber' latest feedback question, found on its web site, asks - What are the top three priorities for the next four years?' Not surprisingly, taxes ranked high as a priority item but waterfront development was also seen as an important challenge along with reduced duplication and unnecessary red tape. A fourth item, and one about to be studied, had to do with identifying the regions cultural base. Along with continuing economic development, utilizing the talents of the City's talented economic development team, the new Council, and its supporting Administration, Cornwall can look ahead to a positive four years of growth. It's a repeat of a 'sellout.' Once again, the Chamber has launched Home For The Holidays shop local campaign. First introduced in 2009, over 30 merchants participated in the program, designed to encourage local citizens to shop in their own community. Member Services Coordinator Kris Ward tells me that 40 merchants are participating this year and the response has been unprecedented. I hope that Chamber members and the community as a whole continue to spend shopping dollars locally. Think about this - when they do so, they not only support the local economy, they keep people employed, and that could be a neighbour or a friend. When you put local shopping in that perspective, it gives it a personal impact and I hope a good reason to spend your dollars where you earned them. On a closing note, I would like to wish both Chamber members and the community at large my best wishes for the Christmas season and my hope is that each one can look forward to 2011 with optimism. Much has happened in Cornwall in 2010 and looking ahead, the New Year has the potential to be even better.

It Pays to be A Chamber Member
It's an commonly-asked question ... what value is there in a Chamber membership? In a word - plenty!
Members reap the benefits of the Chamber's extensive lobbying on their behalf, an advocacy that effects positive change and potential growth for the business community. There are also the important networking opportunities through business mixers, breakfast meetings and the Chamber's ever popular Golf Day.
A steadily increasing bonus, and one many members and prospective members may not realize, is the growing impact of the Chamber's web site. A recent analysis revealed a significant increase in visits and it spells good news for members. Of particular note has been the activity on the Chamber's on-line directory.
"The on-line Business Directory was accessed over 3,000 times in September and over 3100 times in October," reports Executive Director, Lezlie Strasser. "The stats tell us that the Chamber web site is becoming a valuable tool for the business community and one that is steadily growing."
There's more. Local consumers frequently call the Chamber seeking a business that offers a specific product or service. When that happens, the caller is provided with a list of appropriate Chamber members from its Business Directory. It's a great referral services and member businesses reap the benefits.

A Christmas Message From the Chamber
2010 has been a year of challenges and successes for our City. Shoppers Drug Mart has opened its massive new distribution centre along with its beautiful new retail outlet on Brookdale Avenue. Joining Shoppers is the recently opened and much anticipated Bulk Barn, a retail merchant much sought after by local consumers
Our economy continues to grow, our unemployment rate remains low, and many businesses expressed positive optimism, an optimism that continues to pervade the community as the year draws to a close. All over the City there are signs of progress with new construction and upgrades and the December 17 Economic Development Year in Review is sound testament to that progress.
It is with a sense of optimism that the Chamber looks forward to 2011 with its promise of continuing economic growth. For now, as the business sector and the entire community await the pause that only the Christmas Season can bring, the Chamber Board of Directors and its entire staff extend the warmest of wishes to its members and to the entire City for a season that is full of joy, of family, and togetherness.

Canadian Chamber -Report Private Sector Jobs Must be Priority
The October Statistics Canada report revealed that Canada's labour market shed 6,600 jobs in September. According to the Canadian Chamber, it is a clear signal that Ottawa's highest priority must be to encourage private sector job creation.
"While we still see the recovery taking hold, the loss of jobs indicates that the economy is fragile. We need to do everything we can to see it continue," states Perrin Beatty, President and CEO of the national business organization.

Workopolis Has Intriguing Insights About the Workplace
Pulling the Trigger - Top Reasons Canadians Begin the Hunt for a New Job:
Here is the second in the Workopolis series of poll results.
A survey of over 700 working Canadians commissioned by Workopolis and conducted by NorthStar Research Partners revealed that a desire for a better working environment and not feeling valued or appreciated at work were the two most common reasons for considering a change (33% and 30% respectively). The survey also revealed some additional motivators:
∙ Work-life balance is important to Canadians. More than a quarter of respondents (27%) want to leave their work at work and be able to focus on family and friends after hours.
∙ Not getting a promotion or limited career opportunities was the reason 24% of respondents gave for looking for a new job.
∙ Money isn't everything, but it's still important - 19% of respondents began looking for their newest job when they didn't receive a raise.

Popular Home for the Holidays Exceeds Expectations
"Last year's response to the Chamber's Home For The Holidays program was extremely good," reports Jeff Bethune, the business organization's President, "and so far, this year has been even better.'
40 local merchants are participating in Home For The Holidays and here's how local consumers can win. When they spend their dollars at participating stores, restaurants and specialty shops, they become eligible to win valuable gift certificates as well as one of two grand prizes of $1,000 shopping sprees.
According to Member Services Coordinator Kris Ward, the 2010 Shop at Home has been phenomenal. "The demand has been unbelievable," she reports. "So many people are shopping at local businesses that we've had to order an additional 10,000 coupons. The response from Cornwall and area consumers has been amazing and everyone will benefit - consumers, business owners and employees alike."
"I'm pleased that the City of Cornwall is partnering with the Chamber in this season's program, reports Lezlie Strasser, the Chamber's Executive Manager. "We want our shoppers to know they can print as many coupons as they want by visiting the Chamber web site at www.cornwallchamber.com." Each time they make a purchase in one of the participating businesses, they can deposit a coupon. The more they shop at these stores, the greater their chances of winning."
Program details and a list of participating merchants can be found by visiting the Chamber web site. Home For The Holidays begins on Monday, November 22 and continues until Friday, December 24.
