Greetings!
Breakfast ConnectionPresident's Message

The Cornwall and Area Chamber of Commerce and its members have always been optimists. We believe in our potential to create great economic and lifestyle opportunities.

We also believe in being realists. As we welcome a new decade, our realities are ripe with challenge, opportunity and most importantly, our resolve to build a better community in every way. We've changed our economic make-up and battled a recessed economy, but through it all our members have embraced the spirit of possibility. It is a spirit so comfortable to us and wonderfully inspiring to others.

2010 also marks the 120th anniversary of the Chamber.  The commitment of the new Executive and Board of Directors is to continually consult with members on key issues facing business and to work tirelessly on your behalf to create an environment that creates growth for all.  Sometimes that means challenging the various political agendas at play, but it will always be with the most genuine of intent.

Growing business grows our community. It increases our tax base and ultimately will increase our capacity to provide improved services for all. Philosophically simple, but practically the reality is it takes each of us to commit to change.

On the heels of a year that saw the global economy struggle, our region has enjoyed some amazing successes. Development is thriving, employment rates are strong and the creation of a more diverse economic base is beginning to become reality.

The coming year will not be without its challenges as we continue to seek a long term solution to the Cornwall International Crossing issue. We are also cognizant of the new Harmonized Sales Tax rollout that brings with it a new paradigm for so many of our members. Later in 2010, municipal elections will be held to determine the composition of local government that will carry us forward.  It will be a day of important decisions to all to perpetuate our community momentum.

We remain excited by the possibilities ahead and know that our individual and collective success will happen only as a result of great ideas championed by great people.

Throughout the year there will be new and unforeseen challenges that will face all. In those moments, we hope that you will help your Chamber address those issues by connecting with us via our online blog, an e-mail or the old fashioned ways by phone or popping by.

Here's to every success to you this year and beyond.

Canadian Chamber - A Special Report

Satisfaction survey

The Canadian Chamber recently carried out a 'satisfaction-survey', a section of which focused on various products and services it offers to chamber members, which includes the Cornwall Chamber.

Survey results indicated that the two most popular programs (and also the longest standing ones) are the TD Merchant Services payment processing program for VISA, MasterCard and debit transactions (94% of respondents utilize) and the ESSO Business Card Program (81% usage).

The Canadian Chamber was surprised at the number of respondents who were unaware of some of the programs. It plans to intensify its efforts in 2010 to make individual Chambers aware and urges those members to contact the Cornwall Chamber's Member Services Coordinator for details.

Benefit profile: Hotline to HR

'Hotline to HR' is a Canadian company offering  bilingual human resources telephone and email support across North America to over 2,000 member companies (some of them may be Cornwall Chamber members). The Hotline to HR receives enquiries about a broad range of business services including issues with government agencies and workers safety insurance boards. It also gets enquiries about payroll services, employee training, and staffing agencies. However, it does not offer services for employment recruiting; staffing services; payroll services or group health benefit plans.

Two lucky shoppers have each won a $1,000 shopping spree thanks to local merchants. The draw was the final activity for the Home For The Holidays shop local campaign sponsored by the Cornwall & Area Chamber of Commerce and StarTek-Community Matters.

Joyce Kinnear and Sharon Ayres had their coupons drawn from the thousands of entries and each has won a local shopping spree valued at $1,000. In addition, more than 30 other shoppers won $50 gift certificates from participating merchants during the program.

"Home For the Holidays is being judged a success,"  reports Executive Manager, Lezlie Strasser. "The Chamber and its partners are happy with the program and judging from the response from participating merchants and local shoppers, they were pleased as well."

A new Chamber initiative, the Home For The Holidays program focused on thanking shoppers who shopped at local merchants. When they shopped at participating stores, restaurants and specialty shops, they became eligible to win gift certificates and possibly, one of the two grand prizes.

Each week during the program, coupons were drawn from selected stores and the person whose name appeared won a $50 gift certificate. The program ended on December 23. Below is the complete list of winners and business participants.

Monopoly

Vote Cornwall onto the new Monopoly Game Board!

Hasbro, maker of the popular Monopoly board game, is launching a new "Canada Edition" of the game.  There are 22 spots up for grabs on the board, which will carry the names of Canadian cities and towns.  Hasbro has decided to let the fans vote which City will appear on the game.

Cornwall did not make the initial list of 65 nominees, but people can vote the city in as a "wildcard" city! On February 8, the top 10 wildcard cities will officially join the group of cities in the running for the 22 spots.
