Chamber Responds to Next H1N1 Wave With Pandemic Seminar

It is not a question of 'if'.

The H1N1 virus is here and health officials have stated the next wave will occur this fall and will impact both business and the community at large. The Cornwall & Area Chamber of Commerce is concerned about that impact and responded by partnering with local organizations in hosting a Pandemic Planning Seminar.

"The Workplace Safety & Insurance Board suggests absenteeism could be anywhere up to 50% of staff because of the virus," reports Executive Manager Lezlie Strasser. "The next wave will soon be upon us and this seminar has benefitted businesses by giving them the tools that best prepare them to effectively deal with the challenge."

The Chamber's initiative builds upon that of federal Health Ministry. Health Minister Leona Agluqqaq, in conjunction with the Canadian Public Health Agency's Dr. David Butler-Jones is committing $1 million to create a communications plan designed to provide tools and strategies for business continuity planning.

Dr. Paul Roumeliotis from the Health Unit, the Cornwall Community Hospital's Infection Control Director, Christine Cameron, and Brad Nuttley from the City's Emergency Planning were the featured panel for the event held September 10. Well over 100 business professional attended the session and responses were most favourable.

According to the Conference Board of Canada, the H1N1 pandemic is more than just a medical or public health issue. It is a business issue for organizations - one that could seriously affect both their operations and their employees.

As a result of the Chamber's Pandemic seminar, a number of area businesses have a valuable template with which to best prepare for whatever impact the H1N1 has on the region.

Economic Showcase a Must-Attend for Cornwall Business Professionals

The Chamber and Team Cornwall are encouraging the City's business leaders to join the Ottawa bound delegation. It has a limited number of VIP Gold tickets available. These VIP tickets are valued at $269.00 but are available from the Chamber at just  $120.00.

There is more good news. Mike Delaney - Delaney Bus Line has offered courtesy transportation on his new 'Cornwall' bus for the delegates. Have you considered joining the Chamber Board ?
While many of our members may not be aware, your Chamber has been active on a number of fronts. It played an integral role in the efforts to get the international crossing re-opened, its Political Action Committee is working with the municipality on issues affecting the business community and it recently spearheaded a Pandemic Planning seminar to assist local firms in the event of an re-occurrence of the H1N1 virus.

These and other initiatives are but a few of the many ways the Chamber works to make Cornwall a better place for business and a better place for us all to live. For those of us who are involved with the chamber, it is both interesting and it gives us a real sense of contributing.

You can be a part of this active and results-focused organization of close to 700 members in a number of ways. You can offer to sit on one of the many committees (e.g. Business Excellence Awards, Golf Committee, Political Action) or, you can let your name stand for a Directorship on the Chamber Board and have a key role in Chamber activities.

Board elections and committee memberships are looming on the horizon and now is the time to think about how you would like to add your voice. To get a better idea of how you can contribute, why not give me a call. I would be more than pleased to talk about how you can contribute. I can be reached at 613-933-4004 or by e-mail at strasser@cornwallchamber.com.

Come join us and help us to make Cornwall grow and prosper.

Change - Frustrating or Challenging

Change. It has become an annoying cliche and all too often, we hear the tiresome phrase about change being  the only 'constant'.

The reality is - not only is change constant, it is escalating. So say Futurologists who are now suggesting that the change impacting now is the 'tip-of-the-iceberg as to what's in store. For all of us trying to adapt, the challenge will be considerable. You think not? Consider the ease with which our young utilize the endless capabilities of a cell phone and how comfortable they are with I-pods and other 21st century devices then think of your own capabilities.

What many people fail to understand is their perception of change, be it positive or negative, is completely normal. That said, and more often than not, we tend to mobilize our efforts towards the negative and that can prevent us from benefitting from the positive aspects of change. To best respond to change requires that we be well prepared, and an understanding of the issues related to that change will allow us to work through it. Some of the ways we can achieve that is by:

  •  Taking the time to learn why the change is necessary. People adapt more easily to changes they understand.
  • Evaluating its consequences from a fresh point of view to gain a realistic understanding of all the factors involved.
  • Giving the positive consequences the emphasis they merit. Rather than dwell on what may be lost (negative), focus on what will be gained.
  • Share any apprehensions with your professional colleagues. In return, you may get a perception that shifts your thoughts in a positive way.

To get a sense of your resistance to change, complete the exercise below and see how you score.

Circle the number that best corresponds to your reaction never rarely sometimes often always

Challenges motivate me at work and at home             1    2   3   4   5
I easily overcome disappointments                            1    2   3   4   5
I usually evaluate situations on a global level              1    2   3   4   5
I like to have realistic goals                                       1    2   3   4   5
I have a high tolerance for ambiguous situations          1    2   3   4   5
I adapt quickly and easily to an unexpected event       1    2   3   4   5
I am usually very patient and I am flexible                   1    2   3   4   5
When I have a problem, I usually try to solve it myself  1    2   3   4   5
Once I decide to act, I feel responsible for the consequences
                                                                               1    2   3   4   5
I have interest in activities not related to my job           1    2   3   4   5

Tally your score.

If your result is 95 - 100, you have almost no resistance to change.
85 - 94, you find it easy to adapt to change
75 - 84, you are somewhat resistant but can overcome it most of the time
74 or lower, you may have difficulty adapting to change

Pandemic Planning Kit
Ontario businesses have a responsibility to their employees and their communities to be prepared with a plan that will enable them to continue operating as best as possible during a widespread emergency like a flu pandemic. A national survey demonstrates that half of all companies surveyed have no pandemic plan.

The Ontario Chamber of Commerce has updated its Pandemic Planning Tool Kit in order to help member companies develop a realistic and thorough plan.

Government Launches Consultations on Ontario's Accessibility Legislation

Ontario business will be directly affected by new Ontario rules contained in the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act. The Act will governing how, in every aspect of your business, must accommodate people with disabilities.

A wide range of new rules have been and are being created that will affect how business hires and manages employees, communicates to employees, customers and suppliers, changes or renovates buildings and internal structures, and delivers quality customer service. The intent of the regulations is to provide an appropriate working and business environment for people with disabilities.

The Ontario Chamber recently alerted members about public reviews for proposed regulations -- such as the draft Built Environment standards as described in the last Member Bulletin -- now the government has appointed former Liberal Cabinet Minister Charles Beer to conduct a mandatory independent review of the entire Act. Beer is organizing province wide consultations, which will help inform his report to the government of Ontario. Consultation sessions will be held in Sudbury (Oct. 1), Ottawa (Oct 6), Toronto (Oct 14) and London (Oct 20), and Chambers/Boards and their members are encouraged to attend these sessions in person and/or send in written submissions.

Global Experience @ Work -- Apply for Funding

Integrating Foreign Trained Professionals in Ontario's Workplace. The OCC  advises local chambers  you that the Global Experience @ Work launched Phase #2 of its program in July. Chambers are encouraged to apply for a grant to develop a local, customized strategy to facilitate the improved integration of Foreign Trained Professionals (FTPs) in their community.  Applicants are eligible for one, two or three year grants, depending on scope and time-line of their initiative. Grants approved under the program will normally range on an annual basis from $5,000 to $50,000 although the actual funding depend on the merits of the application. Applications are available online and are due September 15, 2009. Guidelines are available at www.globalexperienceatwork.ca.

Ontario Exporters Reach New Markets

Over the past year, companies across Ontario have received a total of one million dollars to export to global markets, from the Ontario Chamber of Commerce. The OCC cost-sharing program, Export Market Access (EMA) has been designed to help Ontario's small and medium sized enterprises diversify their exports. The program is managed by the OCC with funding from the Government of Ontario, and since its inception in 2008 has assisted 100 companies.

"Funding for these companies comes at a crucial time, as some see their traditional markets contract, threatening productivity and job growth here in Ontario," explains Len Crispino, President & CEO of the Ontario Chamber of Commerce. "Just a small helping hand can make the difference as leading Ontario firms adjust to new global trade realities."

The approved companies have received on average $10,000 to support their efforts to make international direct contacts, conduct market research and develop tools specifically for new foreign markets. These companies vary in their specialties and are located across the province including the GTA, Ottawa, Brantford, Kitchener, Hamilton, Sault Ste. Marie, London and Stoney Creek.

"Our government supported this initiative to give exporters across the province some assistance in breaking into new markets, and growing their business," said Sandra Pupatello, Minister of Economic Development and Trade. "We encourage our exporters to take bold steps to widen their markets and develop strategic partnerships, in order to provide new areas of growth for Ontario''s economy."

Recipients operate in a variety of sectors including manufacturing, agriculture, professional and technical services, marketing, wholesale trade and culture. Applications are processed on a continuous intake basis and many more applications are currently being reviewed. Funding decisions are made within 30 business days upon receipt of fully completed applications. The online application and information regarding eligibility criteria can be found at www.exportaccess.ca.

Progress by provinces on E.I. and Buy America

With respect to the recent announcement from Council of the Federation's meeting in Regina, The Canadian Chamber of Commerce welcomes the recommendations of the Premiers to simplify and streamline the E.I. program. The Chamber also goes on record that it is standing behind the federal government in the fight against 'Buy-America', and it is encouraging trade negotiations with the EU, as well as pressing to remove barriers to internal trade.

E.I.. The Canadian Chamber has proposed that eligibility requirements and duration of benefits be standardized in Economic Regions with an unemployment rate of 10% or less. Updated Border Report

The Canadian and U.S. chambers of commerce, in partnership with 47 business associations from both sides of the border have issued a joint report on Finding the Balance: Shared Border of the Future. Following up on their 2008 report, this paper offers specific recommendations to reduce border costs in the short-term while increasing security at the border and competitiveness of all industries.

"Our countries share this common border and must work together to improve the flow of trade and people," declares Tom Donohue, President and CEO, of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. "Businesses rely on an efficient, predictable border to ensure profitability and growth. For the world's largest trading partnership to expand during the recession, cooperation is essential."
