President's Message Over the past few weeks, the Chamber has polled its membership
with respect to the closed Cornwall Crossing and the impact it has had on many
of our local businesses. I speak for the entire organization when I tell how
important this information can be and how much we appreciate members who
participate in these surveys.
We plan to continue seeking your input, as circumstances
warrant and as issues present themselves. As your advocate, the Chamber believes
it essential to hear from the membership at large in order that it may be both
relevant and representative. Our role and your responses during the border
closing issue is a prime example of that relevance and representation.
Simply put - what are those things that could really
'move-the-needle' for your business? Let us know so we can lobby on your behalf,
connect you withothe appropriate source or, simply provide information.
As a closing comment, permit me to offer this. The Chamber
firmly believes your success will determine the future of our community. We are
here as an extension of you to remove the roadblocks, acquire the resources or
information to realize both your vision and your business success.

Adam was gratified by the recognition given him by the Chamber noting that it has motivated him to maintain a high grade point average as he move on with his studies. He is planning to attend Laurentian University to complete degree studies in Business Administration and his long range plan is to earn a Master's Degree at UBC.
The Chamber is proud to recognize the bright young talent from the Cornwall region and wishes Adam the best of luck as he continues to pursue excellence in education.

Prepare For a Higher Dollar
COMPAS, the well known public opinion survey firm based in Toronto. It periodically surveys Canadian CEOs and business leaders on a broad range of topics. In a recent survey the question was asked about the Canadian dollar and where it was headed
According to the COMPAS business leaders panel, they are suggesting the Canadian dollar will rise to near parity with the U.S. dollar by 2011 largely due to inflation rates in the U.S. that will rise to 6.1% and remain higher than inflation in Canada.
The CEOs and business leaders see inflation in the United States will gradually rise from 4% to over 6% over the next two to three years while at the same time, rates will remain lower in Canada. As a result, there will be an increase in the value of the Canadian dollar to near parity with its American counterpart.
They cited U.S. debt loads as causing there to be higher interest rates which will result in other costs continuing to rise. They also noted the difficulty in determining how the U.S. economy will recover given the decline in manufacturing and the increase in the service sector.

DUI ~ Do You Really Know the Consequences? With the summer vacation season well underway, Chamber members and the public at large are well advised to read and to heed the information provided below. Surveys over the past eight years have found that too many people are completely unaware of the some or all of the penalties that can come from driving while under the influence. So says the Community Council on Impaired Driving that has hosted the arrive alive DRIVE SOBER® program for more than 20 years.
OCCID provides leadership and programs to eliminate impaired driving in Ontario and enables people and communities to share resources and information that will prevent injuries and save lives.
The organization is focusing on the new legislation the province of Ontario implemented this past May 1st. According to OCCID, too many people are unaware that: Read more... |
Eco-Driving Can Result in Savings at Gas Pumps The Canadian Automobile Association, CAA, has come up with some timely tips on how to get the most out of a tank of gas during the hot, hazy and sometimes smoggy days of summer. CAA's North & East Ontario office is a Cornwall Chamber member.
CAA is also launching the Autogreen Challenge, designed to encourage motorists to make eco-friendly choices as they prepare for their summer road trips. The Association is giving the public a chance to find out how eco-friendly they are and to take the challenge, visiting the CAA web site at www.caasco.com/autogreen. It extends until August 7.
