| President's Message
By Sandy Adams |
"You give but little when you give of your possessions. It is when you give of yourself that you truly give." -Kahlil Gibron
This past April, I participated, along with several of our members, in a pro bono activity at JA Finance Park in Detroit. We worked with a group of over 100 Detroit middle school students to spend the day as adults, learning skills such as decision making and budgeting. Seeing many of the students begin to understand some of the basic concepts of balancing a budget was encouraging and very satisfying.
Throughout this year, I plan to continue introducing ways for you to "Do One Thing WITH the FPA of Michigan". If you have an interest in giving back to the community and providing financial education to those who might not otherwise have access to financial planning services, pro bono activities are one way to get involved.
In the Southeast Michigan area, we will be offering opportunities to members to help us with a series of financial education sessions with Gilda's Club in Royal Oak. We will be working with small groups of cancer patients and their families, covering a number of basic financial planning topics. Please watch for more information on these opportunities or contact Karen Norman, our Pro Bono Committee chair, for further information.
If you are aware of other pro bono opportunities around the state, and think the FPA should be involved, please let us know. In addition, if you or other FPA members you know are involved in a pro bono activity, please let us know. We would love to highlight members who are giving back to their communities in new and creative ways.
My challenge to you for 2011 -- commit to One Thing WITH the FPA of Michigan. Join us at an upcoming pro bono event, or get us involved in an opportunity in your community. This is just another chance to invite someone along who doesn't know the FPA.
Let us know how we can make your FPA Chapter more valuable for you...we'll help to make it happen!
We look forward to seeing you at an upcoming event.

Junior Achievement Finance Park

| |
This past April, FPA of Michigan once again took part in Junior Achievement Finance Park. FPA of Michigan members Karen Norman, Sandy Adams, Jason Moore, Alan Ferrara, Donna Craw, John Rohrbeck, Carol Johnston and Tom Gunn spent the day volunteering to help students at Junior Achievement's Finance Park. Here's what some of the volunteers had to say about the day ...
- This was my first visit to JA Finance Park. The program provides the students a very "real world" experience in working, getting paid, paying taxes, shopping and paying their bills. Some of the kids are real savers and other were spenders -- most of them learned a lot. Very good -- very worthwhile and a good experience for me. Thank you for providing me the opportunity to participate. Tom Gunn
- JA Park is an amazing facility and creates a wonderful experience for children. It is a lot of fun working with children in this environment and helping them to see all that goes with being an adult. Jason Moore

| 5 Steps to Calming Upset Clients
by Barbara Kay, LPC, RCC | |

It's unnerving to be confronted by an upset client. There's a lot on the line when a client calls or visits in an aggravated state. Adding to the challenge, the financial adviser may not be a disinterested party, but personally involved in some way. Emotions are magnified when advisers have to respond to upset clients and deal with their own concerns at the same time.
I have worked with many advisers over the last several years who faced panicked clients on a regular basis while also dealing with their own professional and financial concerns. It takes real skill to help clients go from crisis to calm at a moment's notice. The following is a step-by-step method to cool down the heat and move toward a resolution with grace and diplomacy.
