President's Message

Sandy Adams

It's election time!   You should have received your ballot in the mail for the 2011 FPA Board - PLEASE REMEMBER TO VOTE and return your ballots promptly.   Holding our elections earlier in the year will allow us to plan ahead for next year, and enhance your FPA Membership experience even more!

For those of you who may have been considering running for a board position or think you might be interested in the future, please join one of our active committees to get a feel for what we do and how we do it.  To see a complete list and description of each committee, please click here.  On that note, I want to extend a huge THANK YOU to all of our members who currently participate on our FPA Michigan Committees.  Please take a look at the list of committee members in this newsletter and make sure to thank these members when you run into them at an upcoming event.  These members are DOING ONE THING and more!!

Kudos to FPA of Michigan member David Patterson who responded to my DO ONE THING call in the July Newsbrief  -

"We recently wrote two blogs titled "A Milestone for Certified Financial Planner Professionals" and "A Step in the Right Direction".

The first blog discussed the 25th anniversary of the establishment of the Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards and the benefits of hiring a CFP®.

The second blog discussed the new finance regulation bill that Congress just passed and the fact that the legislation gave the SEC the authority to require brokers to act in a fiduciary capacity.  The blog discussed the Financial Planning Coalition, the FPA and the fact that Certified Financial Planner licensees are held to a fiduciary standard.

Our blog is part of the Oakland Press' website.  Both blog posts were also published on Morningstar's website. (Patterson Advisors' blogs are selectively posted on the Morningstar website.)

A New Benefit for FPA of Michigan Members...

By:  Richard Feight
Small Business Association of Michigan

The Financial Planning Association of Michigan has a new sponsor and resource partner - the Small Business Association of Michigan (SBAM).  An opportunity presented itself a little over a year ago when another association I am part of bought all their members a SBAM membership. With most of our members being part of small businesses (less than 500 employees), we can benefit from SBAM too.

As a SBAM member you get discounts on benefits like health insurance (with SBAM administered COBRA), free legal advice, marketing, etc, and access to some of Michigan's finest entrepreneurs via SBAM's online forums and e-newsletters.  I've personally enjoyed their podcasts and e-newsletter for marketing ideas, and changes in health reform, as it relates to small businesses.

Probably my most important synergy is the ability for SBAM to bring FPA of Michigan to the discussion on the future of Michigan's Service Tax.  With several registered lobbyist on staff, and offices across the street from the Capitol, SBAM has opened their doors to FPA of Michigan members interested in getting involved. They want us across the table with the 15+ associations and chambers across Michigan they've already partnered with, explaining why tax on your service might not be the answer. Who knows, they may even suggest to their 7000+ small business owner memberships, that they should work with a financial planner from FPA of Michigan? The partnership has just begun....

So look for a welcome packet to arrive in the mail, sign up for their e-newsletters, and check out their discounts. Contact us if you have any questions, and remember, they've got their finger on the pulse of decisions being made at the Capitol about your livelihood, and now so do you.
