A Word from Max
We've been talking a lot about discipleship at The Family Church lately, because discipleship is at the heart of our church's vision: To love God and make disciples everywhere. It is also at the heart of the commission Jesus gave His disciples (that would be us) when He said "Go and make disciples!" As you are probably aware, we are currently in the midst of a series of sermons looking at what it means to be a disciple of Jesus Christ.
In these amazing times in which we live, Christians have more resources, programs and opportunities in "discipleship formation" than ever before. Yet, amazingly, with more and more material and information, there seems to be less and less growth in authentic discipleship. One of the greatest challenges facing a serious follower of Jesus Christ is figuring out what investment of time and energy will yield real fruit. In the midst of our busy, overwhelming schedules it become even more important to identify what is most effective and most important.
Fortunately, we no longer have to guess. A recent study by Willow Creek church, using the best measuring tools available and survey results from over 350,000 people (making it, by far, the largest survey of its kind ever), has answered the effectiveness question. In coming weeks and months we will be looking at some of the findings of the Reveal study and how it can impact discipleship growth. For now, I want to address the number one factor they discovered. Before reading the answer below, consider the question: What single discipleship practice, discipline, or action do you believe is most strongly associated with continued growth in discipleship? Would you guess worship attendance? Membership in a small group? Giving? Serving on a mission team? Having a quiet time? A devoted prayer life? All of these practices are valuable. But there is one practice that was not only ahead of them all, but ahead by a country mile! Second place was not even close! . . .

Whispers in the Dark
Scripture - Many people did believe in him, however, including some of the Jewish leaders. But they wouldn't admit it for fear that the Pharisees would expel them from the synagogue. For they loved human praise more than the praise of God. (John 12:42-43)
Observation - Human praise - it's so alluring, so addictive - how often have I been motivated, not by the word of my Father, but by the roar of the crowd? In these 2 verses we see that human praise works on two different levels. First, we don't want to be scorned by others, so we quietly try to fit in and conform. In Australia they have an expression "The tall poppy gets cut down." This expression sometimes works to keep people humble and from getting puffed up. But it can also work to cause people not to ever go against the crowd, even when the crowd is wrong. Second, we live for the adulation of our peers. This applause seeking is especially dangerous, as it is both addictive and transitory. We crave more and more from the crowd, but the crowd is always fickly and its allegiance is fleeting. Both of these powerful motivators can lure me away from God's plans and direction for my life.

Discipleship Ministry

September 9th is Kickoff Sunday. It's Game Day! It's "go" time! The smell of freshly cut grass. People filing into their seats. The kick-down clock is ticking down and building the excitement. No I am not referring to the first full day of NFL games but rather the worship experience at The Family Church. Since August 19th, we have been practicing our new worship schedule and now it is time to step onto the playing field.
September 9th is Kickoff Sunday for our Family Groups and Adult Enrichment Classes. As the Discipleship Pastor, my number 1 question for each person at The Family Church is - "Are you connected to others in a Family Group?" Healthy relational Family Groups is the environment where authentic discipleship takes place.
Our Adult Enrichment Classes are designed to stimulate growth in your relationship with the Father. I hope this year you will make it a priority to be a player and not just a spectator.
Below is the list of classes. Below that, is a link to the descriptions of each class.

Hi everyone,
Summer has flown by and we're seeing the students return as we gear up for an exciting fall and Q4. We have just completed the Global Leadership Conference and our 19th Birthday as The Family Church. If that wasn't enough, we added a third Sunday service August 19th. Fortunately we have teams of talented volunteers that look forward to reaching more people in this community. One of them happens to be a good friend of mine that you see most of the time on the weekends playing acoustic and lead guitar: Jerry Graybeal. I'll let Jerry take it from here...

I first began playing guitar around the age of 14 at the persuasion of a high school friend and soon after we formed a garage band. Looking back, that began a love of music that would leave for a while and return many years later. Once out of school and on to college I spent the next 18 years not playing at all, but that changed in 1998 when a former worship leader encouraged me to get back into playing and be part of the praise band. I'm so thankful for that moment because it brought me back to the heart of worship. Three years ago I was searching for a new church home and visited The Family Church. I will never forget the feeling I walked away with from that service and knew that I wanted to be a part of what was happening here. God has amazingly blessed this church with incredible musicians and it is such a blessing to play with this group each week.
I made the move from the mountains of NC to FL in 1990 to coach high school football and baseball. In 1998 that led to a move into school administration and I am now the principal at Lake Butler Middle School. I have been blessed with 2 daughters, ages 18 and 15. Away from work, I love listening to live music, the beach, working out, visiting the mountains of NC and just living life to its fullest.
Jerry, thanks for sharing your story. I really enjoy the part of coming back to a heart of worship. Just like Jerry and the rest of our awesome crew, we have room for YOU!...please let me know how we can get you connected.
Come join us as we grow,
Larry

How would you like to have a global impact without leaving Gainesville? Well maybe you are still a little hesitant and wondering, "Okay, so what's the catch? You either want my money or, even worse, you expect me to teach the Bible to Christians ... or still even worse, "evangelize" someone." While none of those things are bad (in fact, they are all normal and good), I was thinking of something that is even easier than those things.
Our missionary partners, Mike and Laura Lothers, serving with Wycliffe Bible Translators, passed along some information to me about a wonderful opportunity for anyone who loves Jesus, speaks English, has access to a computer, and is available for 30 minutes twice a week. With a small investment of your time, this is a practical way to get involved in the Great Commission by "serving as senders." You can either begin, or increase your engagement as a World Christian! Here is the Lothers' explanation about what they are doing:

Youth Ministry
SUMMER IS OVER :(
The incredibly busy summer of 2012 saw the Hubbards buy a house and move in (smack dab in the middle of everything...looking forward to NOT doing that ever again!), dozens of teens serve at VBS, Gainesville Outreach and a few even went across the Atlantic to serve in Ghana, Africa. We had tons of fun swimming, tubing, hitting the beach and just hanging out. Lots of new faces got connected to our FUZE and MSFUZE ministries here at TFC but most importantly, bunches got connected to Christ! The Summer Breakout Tour was a resounding "Praise God" week!!! Not only did a group of 57 students and staff have an absolute blast of an adventure climbing mountains, whitewater rafting, ziplining the Appalachians, serving a couple of ministries in great need in SC and connecting more deeply with friends, but 23 teens connected with their creator through faith in His son Jesus as either first time decisions or re-dedications. WOOOOOO! Folks, it was a quality summer and as your youth pastor, I am well satisfied with what I got to see God do. But I know that I know that I know that it's just the tip of the proverbial iceberg because....

The Problem: Billions of Years
Stephen F. Larner, PhD

The Issue1
One of the most divisive issues within the Church today centers on the question is the earth billions of years old. To accept billions of years of death, disease and extinction along with natural disasters before the creation and Fall of man not only contradicts, it destroys, the Bible's clear teaching about the Creation Week and the Fall. It also undermines the Bible's message regarding the complete redemptive work of Christ. Let us examine this important issue.
Scriptures inform us that all divine acts in Genesis 1 occurred instantaneously on the days specified. Conversely, nothing even hints God required or used billions of years to achieve His objectives. Psalm 33:6-9 emphasizes the miraculous and instantaneous nature of divine creative acts, "By the word of the LORD the heavens were made, and by the breath of His mouth all their host. . . . For He spoke and it was done; He commanded, and it stood fast." Likewise, all Jesus Christ's miracles, the Creator who became a man (John 1:1-10), transpired instantly when He spoke.

Orphan Care Ministry
Everyone over here at the Orphan Care Ministry wants to extend a huge thank you to our church family for jumping in so eagerly to pack Journey Bags for children entering foster care. The first weekend, we flew through the bags that we had available, and many more lists were given out for folks to purchase their own bag to fill. We are so incredibly grateful for the response and the love that it will communicate to children in great need.
Because of the way our church family stepped up to care for these kids, we are eager for each of you to get the chance to come and pray with us as we gather the bags on Sunday, Sept. 9 at 11 am (location TBA). We will begin right on time and end in time for you to make it over to the third service. We trust that this time of prayer will be a chance for God to further reveal to us His heart and compassion for these children. Truly, anyone who has been a part of the Orphan Care Ministry for any length of time will tell you that God meets us and changes us as we pray for the fatherless. We have seen Him answer prayers in some very powerful ways, turning seemingly hopeless and scary situations into places of great rejoicing. We serve a God who moves on behalf of those whom the world overlooks.

The M.O.B. (Men of Brotherhood)
The Men's Ministry continues to seek opportunities to encourage the men of our church and community to be the men of God that is described in Scripture. We want to be more loving husbands, more effective as fathers, and more courageous disciples of Christ. We have three focuses in our effort to lead our men in that direction - discipleship, fellowship, and service. Please be watching for these opportunities as they are made available.
On October 13th, Iron Sharpens Iron is sponsoring a one day conference. This is an annual event that provides a powerful message for men. The speakers this year are Dr. Bob Reccord and Dr. Ron Cooper. Put this date on your calendar as this is one you do not want to miss. More information will follow.
On the fellowship side, the Men's Bowling League will start again on September 10th. This is a time of great fellowship and average bowling. If you cannot or do not choose to commit to a ten-week league, come when you can as we always need substitutes. And did I mention that being a good bowler is not a requirement?
There are many opportunities for service through family groups or the "Love Your Neighbor" ministry led by Jack Loveless. See Jack if you want to be involved in that ministry. All men are encouraged to get into a family group as this is the very best chance to serve others in your group.

Stand Fast!
2 Thessalonians 3:13-16
But we are bound to give thanks to God always for you, brethren beloved by the Lord, because God from the beginning chose you for salvation through sanctification by the Spirit and belief in the truth, to which He called you by our gospel, for the obtaining of the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Therefore, brethren, stand fast and hold the traditions which you were taught, whether by word or our epistle.
Now may our Lord Jesus Christ Himself, and our God and Father, who has loved us and given us everlasting consolation and good hope by grace, comfort your hearts and establish you in every good word and work.
