Be Encouraged!

Why, my soul, are you downcast? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my Savior and my God.  - (Psalm 42:5, NIV)

This year has been full of challenges and tough situations for many people. Whether it was financial difficulties, health problems, family issues, or any number of other things, 2010 certainly took a toll on us personally or those close to us. I recently heard a co-worker say, "I can't wait for this year to get over." Perhaps you can relate to that sentiment. I guess that's one of the reasons I'm glad Christmas comes at the very end of the year. Just when it seems like we've been beaten down all year by life, we are reminded that Jesus came to give us hope and a way to live victoriously over our circumstances now and in the future. By celebrating Jesus' birth, we proclaim that we understand we don't need to be downcast when everything seems to be going wrong. Our lives are in the hands of the Messiah, and His love and grace will always be sufficient for whatever we face.   ~Jim Guth

Academy Preschool Updates

Academy New Program

During the first five months the preschool has enjoyed the trials of starting a new program and grown from an opening enrollment of nine students to 14. Another five are pre-enrolled to start in January.

In the five months our students have studied the fall season with its exciting colors. They are learning basic shapes, counting to 10, and letters of the alphabet. Each day they hear a bible story, engage in fine motor skill activities, develop socialization skills, have great snacks, and naptime.

A Word From Max
Max

As we move into 2011, the end of the year inevitably brings with it some times of reflection on the past year. For many 2010 was a tough year, with challenges on numerous fronts. For some, it was also a year of great successes. However, for all of us, whatever our circumstances, it can be a Romans 8:28 year, if we choose for it to be. John Maxwell offers some thoughts on how to put the year in perspective. I find them helpful and offer them up to you here.

At this stage, the punctuation you put on 2010 will not depend as much on what you do but on your point of view. As you look back on the past year, you likely experienced highs and lows, encountered blessings and victories alongside hardship and heartache. As you wrap up 2010, be sure your attitude toward the last twelve months is providing you with the healthy perspective needed to finish strong.

Here are three suggestions to help you adopt a mindset that makes the most of 2010.

Whispers In The Dark

Scripture: Exodus 9:7 - "Pharaoh sent men to investigate...yet his heart was unyielding."

Observation: Pharaoh pretended that he wanted to understand what God was doing and what was really going on. He "consulted" advisers, wise men, even magicians. He sent people to investigate. He asked questions. He pretended to search for the truth. In reality, however, all the searching was a smoke screen, an attempt to buy time, or to seem sincere because even when confronted with the truth, he never yielded his heart. Thus, all his searching was in vain.

Welcome, Pastor Jeff West

As you all know, Pastor Jeff Moody will be leaving our church staff effective the end of 2010. After spending the better part of the last twelve years serving the Lord here, he will answer the call to give direction to a new mission training center opening here in Gainesville, FL. Although we are excited for Pastor Jeff and he leaves with our love and blessings, it also leaves a legacy of faithfulness that needs to be filled.

You will be happy to know that the Lord was way out in front of us on this one. We are pleased to announce that Pastor Jeff West has already joined our staff and is assuming the role of Associate Pastor of Missions and Evangelism here at the church. I hope you will join me in welcoming this outstanding addition to our staff.

The year 2010 has been a great year. We are blessed and grateful for the opportunity to serve and watch how God has touched lives around us. So, from all of our team leaders and members in the worship and arts division:  Merry Christmas & Happy New Year!!!

Come join us as we grow, Larry

On The Home Front     with Connie Reid

I am always curious this time of year to see who is still staying in touch with us via Christmas Cards. With the advent of social networking it makes it all the more special to receive a card in the mail. There are a few that always amaze me. People from the distant past, I am talking 30 plus years ago, who are still faithfully sending us an update on their lives and family. The thing that is surprising is that some of them are people I would never have guessed as being remotely interested in our lives or sharing theirs. In some cases these are people I now email on a regular basis but hardly knew at the time we lived in the same community.  It makes me conclude that Christians are impacting people that they do not even know very well or interact with on a regular basis. May the miracle of Jesus continue to glow ever brighter in our hearts in the coming year.

With this cold weather setting is so early I thought a nice warm casserole would be just the recipe to share.

Stars - Too Blue and Too Few     By Stephen F. Larner, PhD

Crab Nebula image

Introduction

On a clear night, you can see thousands of tiny gems shining in the heavens. They are a reminder that the universe is thousands, not billions, of years old, and that Almighty God created them. The evolutionary teaching is that stars formed from collapsing clouds of hydrogen gas billions of years ago and that they continue to form today. What most people are unaware of is that there are serious scientific problems with this belief.

Let us examine the properties of stars and review some of the evidence supporting their age as being thousands of years old.

Background

Stars differ in color. Let us begin by exploring some of the properties of stars. Just as

I Corinthians 15:41 states, each is unique even the over one hundred billion stars in our galaxy alone. Stars range in color from red to blue. The color indicates the star's surface temperature and can span from 7,200 to 36,000°F. The coolest stars are red while the hotter stars are orange, then yellow, white, and finally blue. Our sun has a surface temperature of about 11,000°F.

Family Student Movement

FSM Logo

In the Family Student Movement our goal is to see our families, students and children "Share Life Together;" to do this we like to lead by example, show, teach, and walk through with our students and children on how to be "Self-Feeding Christians".  We encourage them to do things that will drive them to the Word of God, to be in relationships that hold them accountable to God, to know that God is the source to feed their soul, encouraging them to keep Christ at the center of their lives, and rejoicing with them when they see fruit from their relationship with God and their relationships with others.  These actions and disciplines will have an impact on their lives directly and over time we hope they will become "Self-Feeding Christians."  Check out the following profiles to hear what some of our own are saying about being a "Self-Feeding Christian."   CLICK HERE to read on.

ADOPTION:  A Godly Act of Love     by David Hankins

As I reflect on the Biblical command to care for orphans, I see several parallels between God's love for us and the love we as parents share with our children.  Romans 8 tells us about these qualities of love.

When we choose to adopt or foster parent a child, we as Christians show them a new level of love.  We make them members of our family, with full protection.  Likewise, God's spirit does not make us slaves, living in fear, but adopts us as sons of God into his family (Romans 8:15).

You can become a foster or adoptive parent.  Many children need the level of love you can give.  When my wife and I first went to the adoption agency, they dropped a huge, thick book on the table with a thud, and said, "Tell us the kind of child you want."  This was a book of hundreds of pages filled with the smiling, hopeful faces of children.  We looked back at them and said, "We want a child who needs a loving home."

The Spirit of God rescues us from the certain death that comes as a penalty for sin and gives us life because of Jesus' righteousness (Romans 8:10).  Similarly, you can come alongside a child living without love and without hope and give them a better life.  Just as we can't guard ourselves against the Evil One who wants to destroy us, children without parents can't guard themselves against hunger, fear, and the lack of love that result from being alone in the world.

Women's Ministry     "The Harvest is Waiting;Time is Not!"     with Rene Cloutier

Rene Cloutier

When you read this article, it will be 2011 or close to it! A new decade is beginning.  So, I say to each and every one of you, HAPPY NEW YEAR!  May God shower His blessings upon each of you and those you love.

Sometimes when I write, I ask the question, "Am I the only one who is thinking ________?"  But this time, I KNOW I am not the only one thinking, 'Where did the last 10 years go?' I am sure each of us could come up with a list of things we have done or things that have happened, and that list would be a mile long; no really, at least a mile long. We could also come up with a list that perhaps is not so long of the things that we wished we had done - you know, things like travel the world, lose those extra pounds that we keep finding, write a book, create an artistic masterpiece - things like that and more. The clock is ticking and every minute that goes by is a lost minute, a lost choice that we will never get back. Many live lives at a frantic pace, trying to pack it all in.  But is frantic living, a life lived with a sense of urgency?  As I write this, there are 10 more days until Christmas, 10 shopping days until Christmas, 9 if I don't count our day of rest.  While I have most of my shopping done, those hard to buy for or the few last gifts that I have been meaning to get are stirring in me a sense of urgency.  The deadline for this article was yesterday, and I am sensing an urgency to get this article in my email outbox before the sun rises today.  My grandchildren each day are growing and changing and I am sensing an urgency to impart to them Jesus and His wonderful news of God's love for us before the world begins to lull them into all the possibilities of life. Raymond and I will be celebrating his 50th birthday in a few months by taking a cruise to Alaska and I have an urgency to lose those extra pounds before we go.    Now a sobering fact - every 5 seconds someone in this world has died.
