A Word from Max
Last week The Family Church was blessed to receive a visit from one of the missionaries we support: Brother Ronnie Doss. Along with his wife Joanne, Brother Ronnie has been running a children's home in a rural mountainous region of Honduras for the past 21 years. During that time he has spent less than two months TOTAL back here in the United States! The rest of the time he has spent faithfully following what he believes is the Lord's calling in his life.
The accomplishments have been many. The Children's Home now houses over 200 people (approx. 125 children and around 75 support staff) with a school, multiple dormitories, a dining hall, a church, a gymnasium, fish ponds, cattle, chickens, and many support buildings and facilities. It is quite different from the barren mountainside Brother Ronnie purchased two decades ago and began to work with his bare hands. But the work doesn't stop there.
In the surrounding mountain villages, (continued)

Whispers in the Dark Scripture: Psalm 105:19 - "Until the time his prediction came true, the Word of the Lord tested him."
Observation: In this portion of Psalm 105 the Psalmist recounts the adventures of Joseph, son of Jacob. Although Joseph had predicted many things, those things shared with him in dreams and visions from the Lord, it had generally not gone well for him. His obedience to the Lord had caused him to be sold into slavery, and later shackled, imprisoned, and seemingly forgotten. Thus Joseph had a decision to make: would he remain faithful to God and His Word, would he continue to live out his values and beliefs, or would he give up on God in frustration and anger? In other words, how would he deal with life set-backs that seemingly prevented the "plans and purposes" he thought God had for him from coming into being? The Psalmist says that the Word of the Lord was "testing" him. The word "testing" in this sense means: refining, proving, seeing what he is made of, or strengthening him. It was an important time for Joseph, a time of preparing him for what God had in store. Of course, God's plans did come to pass with Joseph, and he was well prepared to deal with them. (continued)

Worship Through Creative Arts with Larry Carpenter
To paraphrase a recent "thankful" prayer in staff meeting, "it's great to have our congregation back from summer break!" Between the family vacations and the summer break for our college students, I'm glad you're back! More than that, I'm excited to see what God is going to do through all of us for the remainder of the year.
We have been fortunate to add new people in our worship and arts teams and we still have room for you. Please don't hesitate to connect with any one of our teams - sound, lighting, media, video, worship, musicians, dance, and drama. I look forward to hearing from you. 352-332-6459 ext 19

"Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it" (Proverbs 22:6).
We have heard these great words of wisdom many times. They obviously apply to parents and the raising of their children. What about those who are young in their faith? Does this proverb apply to them as well?
We are commissioned to make disciples, not to make believers. Salvation through God's grace by trusting in Christ saves lost people and makes believers. It is our job to make disciples; to teach and train new believers. As men and as leaders, we have an awesome responsibility to disciple. Our first responsibility is to our family. We are to teach and train our kids, and be the spiritual leaders in our homes. Many men fall away from that responsibility and find it difficult to do. Many have abdicated that responsibility to others.
After the responsibility to our families, we should be involved in the discipleship process with other adults at some level. Family groups and mentoring one-on-one as well as serving others are all ways in which we are discipled and can disciple others. Ministries specifically for men provide a great way for men to spiritually grow. It is in the male context that many men will grow in their understanding and love of Jesus Christ, and open up to the guidance and teachings of Holy Spirit. Sometimes just being around other men makes things more relevant and understandable.
So, I'll leave you with these questions. Who are you discipling? Where are you serving? And, are you connected with someone who is discipling you?

Women's Ministry
Resting in the Shadow of the Almighty
Fall once again is upon us, and with that begins the hustle and bustle of what this season brings. The women's ministry jump started this fall with our Women's Mini-Retreat, "Fearfully and Wonderfully Made." Psalm 139 If you are a friend of the church on facebook, you were able to view some of the pictures from that wonderful event, hosted by Victoria/Paul McArthur in their lovely home. From the comments passed on to me and those I received directly, each woman who was able to attend was blessed beyond what had been anticipated to be sure. The food, the fellowship and the mini-messages from Linda Callahan, Wanda Kline and myself were certainly "soul food."
What I had shared at the retreat basically outlined just how wonderfully God made us; how He gave such careful attention to so many details in creating us, and for most people those details will go un-known or unnoticed for a life time. This fact got me to thinking about the fact that if God paid so much attention to the details of our physical bodies that are "here today and gone tomorrow," how much more does He pay attention to that part of us that will live eternally - our spirits. The word tells us that "He has given us everything we need for life and godliness." 2 Pet 1:3 Yet how much of our time, if we are honest, do we spend worrying about so many things, compared to how much time we spend "resting in the shadow of the almighty?" Ps. 91:1

Life is in the Blood By Stephen F. Larner, PhD
Fig. 1: Red blood cells with one white blood cell. |
Have you ever thought of why the Lord, through His Word is so focused on blood? Such as "life of the flesh is in the blood (Lev. 17:11)", the need for blood sacrifices (Lev. 17:11), and why the blood of Jesus Christ is necessary and sufficient to cover our sins. Perhaps God is trying to tell us something so profound it can only be discovered by examining blood in more detail.
Vital Characteristics of Blood - From the earliest days in the mother's womb until the day one dies, a person's life is in their blood. Even a person-to-person blood transfusion is called "the gift of life." Blood, a liquid tissue, functions as a fluid. Fluids flow, carrying either suspended or dissolved solids and gases, and respond to even slight pressure changes by continuously changing shape. Blood with its blood vessels, consequently, form an incredibly flexible conduit in the exact shape of a person's body at any moment connecting the outside world to the deepest cells inside. Cellular metabolic demands are unrelenting. That is why nearly all of the estimated 60 trillion cells in the body are always close to blood vessels so that they will be close to the life giving oxygen and fuel they need, and so the subsequent waste can be quickly and efficiently removed.(continued)

What's for Breakfast?
While you are sleeping the body is busy collecting unneeded or toxic substances ready for elimination when you wake. It is also busy repairing damaged tissue and cells, fighting disease and doing other functions to contribute to a healthy body. Imagine as you " break- the- fast" in the morning how important it is to send the cells of your brain, heart and muscles good fuel and nourishment.
Here is a recipe I have been using for several weeks. It is light, filling, nutritious and tastes good. I find myself looking forward to it. It will help any of you with dry skin, dry eyes, lack of energy, and is very effective in helping prevent heart disease, breast cancer, diabetes, and alleviating some of the effects of arthritis. This was developed by Dr. Johanna Budwig who spent a lifetime researching the importance of healthy oils in our diet in regard to disease prevention. You will need an electric coffee grinder which can be purchased at Publix for around $10. It will also involve a trip to the health food store. I found everything I needed at Wards.

Moses Abraham Jonah Philip
Paul
In every one of these cases, there are a couple of common truths:
1. They knew exactly what God was saying to do
2. Even if they did not have the whole picture, they had enough information to take a step of obedience
Moses: "Go deliver my people from bondage" Abraham: "Get up, leave your country, and go to the land I will show you" Jonah: "Go preach to Ninevah" Philip: "Go share the gospel with that man in the chariot over there" Paul: "Take the gospel to the Gentiles"
In all of these cases, there was no question what God was telling them to do. God ALWAYS gives enough information to take a next step of obedience. He may not tell us all in one moment everything we will eventually need to know, but He reveals enough of an intention, enough of a direction, so that we can obey Him. Then He leaves that choice with us (continued)
