A Word from Max
Well, I'm back from my sabbatical, and it is really good to be home. Thank you to everyone for making my homecoming so enjoyable and for the gracious response I received when I stood to preach on the Anniversary service. You all made me feel much loved. I am grateful. I am also deeply grateful to all the pastors, servants, elders, deacons, and others who worked so hard this summer to keep TFC going in my absence. What a great summer: wonderful messages, great classes, camps, VBS, Truth Project, and much life change. It is so awesome what God continues to do through the Body of Christ at TFC. I am surely looking forward to the future.
Several of you have asked about the progress of the book I am working on. Although I got a lot done on it this summer, it is not completed. I hope to finish it by the end of 2010. However, by the time you read this, we will be in the midst of a sermon series entitled "The Goods on the Devil" (which is also the working title of the book) and much of what will be in the book will also be shared during this series. All of us deal with temptation (the Bible says that temptation is common to all human beings) and we all have an Enemy who is set on our destruction. In this series, we will look not only at the nature and problem of temptation, but how to recognize the wiles of Satan, how to defend against him, and how to overcome temptation. I hope you will be here for this important series.

Whispers in the Dark
Scripture: I John 1:5-10 - "Now this is the message we have from Him and declare to you: God is light and there is absolutely no darkness in Him. If we say, "We have fellowship with Him," and walk in darkness, we are lying and are not practicing the truth. But if we walk in the light as He Himself is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus His Son cleanses us from all sin. If we say, "We have no sin", we are deceiving ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. If we say, "We have not sinned," we make Him a liar and His word is not in us."
Observation: The deceiver tries his best to bring us into darkness and deceive us into thinking that darkness is light. Yet John tells us that God is light and there is no darkness in Him at all. And so many of us, even those of us who love Jesus, try to cover over our own sinfulness and pretend that it doesn't matter to God or our lives. Yet John says when we live this way we are living in deception. The antidote to deception and deceptive living is to bring our lives into the light of His Word. Then, trusting in the rightness and righteousness of His word, to confess and acknowledge our own sinfulness when it is exposed. Finally, we are called to walk in the light He gives us, and trust that He can not only forgive our sins, but also restore our relationship (with God and others) so that we can have fellowship with Him and one another, and cleanse us from unrighteousness so that we can be made pure again.

October is
Pastor Appreciation Month
Now we ask you, brothers, to respect those who work hard among you, who are over you in the Lord and who admonish you. Hold them in the highest regard in love because of their work..."
(I Thessalonians 5:12-13)
We would like to honor and bless our Pastors on staff, Max, Patrick, Jeff, Jim and Kent. Here are a few things are planning and would love for you to join with us. (This will go on for the month of October. )

Worship Through Creative Arts with Larry Carpenter
Recently a well known Pastor published the "10 Characteristics of Growing Churches". Most of the list consisted of obvious things you would hope to find in every church like:
1. Leaders that lead
2. Passion
3. Leveraging technology and
4. Generosity
For me point # 4 really seemed to stand out as "They are full of Ordinary People". This fourth characteristic continues to point out that "God always uses ordinary people to accomplish extraordinary things. Jesus didn't choose one scribe or Pharisee when He launched the church and Acts 4:13 talks about how He used ordinary people to absolutely turn the world upside down".
Another caveat in his observation is that "staff members would attend that church even if they weren't on staff". Fortunately this is true for The Family Church because we have staff that attended years before coming on board as well as previous staff members who participate in ministries every week. What makes it even more interesting is that God has blessed us with people who are above the ordinary. So, with the "desire to serve others" that God can work through to accomplish extraordinary things in this community, let's turn Gainesville upside down!
Come join us as we grow, Larry

The House of Discipleship
We just recently held a leadership meeting for our Family Group and Family Student Movement Leaders, to dig deeper in our commitment to personify the vision of The Family Church to make disciples who Love the Lord, Link Our Lives, Liberate the Lost, and Leave a Legacy - all within the context of thriving discipleship relationships.
We can picture our goal for discipleship with the illustration of a house - since we are The Family Church, and since we are talking about small house groups being the engine of discipleship, this visual seemed appropriate.

WHERE HAVE ALL THE REAL MEN GONE?
by Jim Guth and Russ Franklin
There once was a time in our country, not so long ago, that men gladly went to church every Sunday and were the spiritual leaders of their homes. They went to war and sacrificed their lives to fight for their country. Men would work two, sometimes three jobs to make sure that their families were provided for. Men would do anything to make sure their families were safe and provided for.
As the years have gone by, men are reverting back to adolescent behavior and becoming more like boys in a man's body! Many men are living for themselves only, living with their parents longer, spending more time playing video games, and do not want to marry. Many have neglected the idea of "responsibility" for themselves and others. What has happened to men?
As we have ripped God out of the foundation of this country, society has since replaced the message of the Bible with some of the following messages; "Men don't need God to be successful.", "Men don't need church.", "Men don't have to marry, they can just live with a partner.", "Men don't need to be an involved parent, let someone else do it." Men don't need to lead, let someone else do it."
We cannot recover as a society if men will not stand up once again and choose to be the men of God that we are called to be (1 Peter 3:8-9). We are commanded to influence our nation, our schools, our government, and our families for Christ (Matt. 28:19). God is calling YOU to be the "real deal" and to influence your family, your community, and the world for the greatness of Jesus Christ and His Kingdom!

"Transformation: Only One Thing Is Needed"
written by Patrick Morley, PhD
Christianity promises to transform you into a different kind of person, not merely a "better version" of you. "Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come!" (2 Corinthians 5:17)
The goal of life, once born again, is to be transformed. . .

Women's Ministry
Compete for the Kingdom! Article by Linda Strickland
I don't know about you, but there are days when I feel like the kingdom of darkness is pushing so hard on me that I am tempted to give up. In my struggle I turn to the scriptures which remind me that being a Christ-follower will not be easy, that I can expect persecution and defamation. I read about the struggles of the disciples and all that they went through. And then I re-read the Passion and I picture Jesus hanging on that cross asking His Father to forgive His offenders - and I am humbled.
But to be honest, I am not consoled. Some days are just really hard. Have you ever felt this way? I have. It is easy to feel discouraged, especially when people disappoint you. I realize that our fight is not against flesh and blood (people), but Satan will certainly use flesh and blood against us.
The last time I was going through a particularly difficult time, I was complaining to the Lord about the enemy pushing me around. His response was immediate and crystal clear: "PUSH BACK!" He said. "How?" I asked Him . . .

Synthetic Life Created in the Lab - Not! By Stephen F. Larner, PhD
Bacterial Chromosomes |
The headlines scream: CNN - "Scientists Create a Living Organism" & MSNBC - "It's Alive! Artificial DNA Controls Life."Do not let headlines like these deceive you. These reports proclaim that Dr. Craig Venter's lab (one of sequencers of the human genome) created an organism with the first "synthetic genome." Despite the initial excitement these news reports generated, life was not made de novoin the laboratory. Evolution has not been proven.
How should this achievement, dramatic and groundbreaking though it is, be understood? Live Scienceheadlined the story, "First Live Organism with Synthetic Genome Created." The word "created" emphasized in the article makes it appear as if the lab produced something entirely new from scratch, i.e. "artificial life." New Scientisteven dubbed it the "Immaculate Creation." However, closer inspection shows this "synthetic genome" still uses the same DNA found in living bacterium. It also required premade cellular proteins and a cell body.

Nature is Our Best Health Option
This summer has greatly increased my awareness of the effect of diet on health as I have been doing a lot of research and reading regarding the subject. I want to pass along a few nuggets that you may not be aware of regarding the food you eat or serve your family.
1. Keep it wild and free.
When we coop up the chickens, lot-raise the cows, and crowd fish into artificial ponds, a couple of unwanted affects occur. First, the ratio of omega 3 to omega 6 goes from 1:1 to 1:15. Omega 3 is what you want to consume while the excess of omega 6 will increase weight and inflammation. Inflammation has been tied to cancer formation.
Another negative affect is that the crowding increases the animal's stress level and diseases. This requires the use of antibiotics which gets passed on to you in the food and makes us more resistant to antibiotics. Yet another thing that happens with milk that is not organic is the addition of the bovine growth hormone (BGH). This also gets passed on to us and directly feeds any cancer that is trying to or has formed in your body. Only the United States allows the BGH to be used in milk production.
