Exceptions in our Lives    with Jim Bradford

How often do we live "the exceptions" in our lives? We are moving in a good direction but there is that one exception that seems to mark our lives, that one thing that we decide is more important to us than continuing on the good path. Recently, I read our bookmark readings about Solomon in 1 Kings 3:3. Solomon had just assumed the role of King over Israel and the scripture says, "Now Solomon loved the Lord, walking in the statutes of his father David, except he sacrificed and burned incense on the high places." It was this exception that caught my eye that morning. Why is this recorded in the scriptures? What is the significance?

I began to observe the scriptures and found some pretty considerable warnings about high place worship. First, 2 Chronicles 1:3-4 points out that Solomon led the assembly to the high place in Gibeon because that is where God's tent of meeting which Moses had made in the wilderness was. However, David had brought the ark of God to Jerusalem and pitched a tent for it there. Why is this so important? It seems, that they had taken upon themselves to do things differently than what God prescribed. You've got the ark in one place and the tent of meeting in another. That wasn't God's plan or God's way. The ark is where the presence of the Lord would rest in the Holy of Holies. So to go to a different place in order to burn incense to the Lord is really out of place.

Worship Through Creative Arts   with Larry Carpenter

This time of year during graduation I'm reminded of Psalms 78  because it's all about the next generation as well as the unborn. Actually, this is great advice in any season...check it out!

Verse 4-7 - "We will not hide them from their children; (speaking of wisdom/stories from our fathers) we will tell the next generation the praiseworthy deeds of the Lord, his power, and the wonders he has done. He decreed statutes for Jacob and established the law in Israel which he commanded our forefathers to teach their children so the next generation would know them, even the children yet to be born, and they in turn would tell their children. Then they would put their trust in God and would not forget his deeds but would keep his commands."

Cool thing is, we are never too old to learn from the past and reflect on the mercy and faithfulness of Christ in our daily lives.

Come join us as we grow...Larry

Discipleship Heading
with Jeff Moody

     1) When Jesus had called the Twelve together, he gave them power and authority to drive out all demons and to cure diseases, 2)and he sent them out to preach the kingdom of God and to heal the sick. 3)He told them: "Take nothing for the journey--no staff, no bag, no bread, no money, no extra tunic. 4)Whatever house you enter, stay there until you leave that town. 5)If people do not welcome you, shake the dust off your feet when you leave their town, as a testimony against them." 6)So they set out and went from village to village, preaching the gospel and healing people everywhere.  Luke 9:1-6

There are a lot of truths to learn from this passage, but there is one particular aspect of this that God has been speaking to me.

Jesus told His followers, "Take nothing for the journey--no staff, no bag, no bread, no money, no extra tunic."  Why?  Are these things wrong?  Are they sinful?  No.  So why would Jesus say not to bring them?

Does This Resonate With You?      with Jim Guth

Mindful man graphic

D. L. Moody once heard these words: "The world has yet to see what God will do, with, and for, and through, and in, and by, the man who is fully and wholly consecrated to Him." Moody thought to himself, "He said a man. He did not say a great man, nor a learned man, nor a rich man, nor a wise man, nor an eloquent man, nor a smart man, but simply 'a man.' I am a man, and it lies with the man himself whether he will, or will not, make the entire and full consecration. I will try my utmost to be that man."

A Call to Beauty

In the last month, like many, I have taken part in a myriad of events. These events have brought to mind the topic of Beauty. Let me quickly highlight them and then share what I believe God has placed on my heart to share with you.

The latter part of April our Women's ministry hosted the Beth Moore Simulcast on "So Long Insecurity". Almost 200 hundred women gathered together to be encouraged by Beth to say goodbye to our insecurities and walk confidently in our faith through the power of the Holy Spirit and the truth of God's word with regards to who we are. It was a wonderful experience; there was a beauty in that room that I believe honored God in light of who He made us to be in our representation of Him. We were one of 869 sites that hosted this event; we were 200 of the 300,000 women being ministered to that day. Beth challenged us that while we couldn't change our world, we had the potential to change the culture of our church; the future for our children and grandchildren - generations to come. I saw great beauty that day.

Biblical Astronomy, Part 1 - No Contradictions Necessary

                                                    By Stephen F. Larner, PhD

Earth Is the Bible the best source for understanding astronomy? The Bible, written under the inspiration of Lord, is His means of conveying the true history of the universe. Although it is not a science textbook, per se, it tells us how the universe began and what changes occurred to make it what it is today. The fact that it is not a textbook is a good thing considering that science is centered on the convictions of human beings who know very little and who are error prone. That is why science textbooks change; new discoveries are made so that what was once considered evidence must now be adapted to a new reality. Yet God never needs alteration and neither does His Word. He got it right the first time. Let us look at what the Bible teaches about astronomy over the next two columns.

Earth Is Round:

Were you aware that the Bible suggests strongly that the earth is round? Isaiah 40:22 refers to the "circle of the earth." When seen from space, the earth appears as a circle since it is round harmonizing perfectly with God's Word.

Apples of Gold Group

Apples of Gold

There are several mentoring programs offered at the Family Church one of which is "Apples of Gold". People are often puzzled at the name which  is derived from Proverbs 25:11, "A word aptly spoken is like apples of gold in a setting of silver." The program runs for seven weeks meeting once weekly for a cooking demonstration, Bible study and lunch. At the conclusion of the program a dinner is held where the husbands join their wives and the mentors and their husbands for a dinner. This month the most recent group concluded with a dinner held at our home. This attractive group is shown in the accompanying picture.

Over a hundred young women have gone through this program and over 30 mentors have been involved in the various sessions offered. I continue to be impressed by the wisdom the mentors bring to the various discussions and the sincerity, as well as spiritual maturity, the young women possess. The future is in good hands as far as these young adults are concerned.

I would encourage older adults who have been soaking up the word for years in various Bible studies, church services and family groups to say "yes" when asked to serve in any capacity where they can pass their experience and knowledge on to the next generation. I guarantee you will receive an unexpected blessing from doing so.
