A Word from Max

It is hard for me to believe that Easter is almost upon us, yet it is also exciting as we move towards my favorite celebration of the year! Easter celebrates the most important event in the history of humanity: The resurrection of our Lord. In that resurrection Jesus defeated sin and death, and forever reminded us that our sins, our failures, even our deaths never have the last word if we embrace the transforming power of His grace. That truth is always a truth we need to hear. Yet many of us still choose to define our lives by our failures and mistakes of the past.

In 1974, poor old Fred Snodgrass died. The New York Times printed the news with this headline, "Fred Snodgrass, 86, Dead/Ballplayer Muffed Fly in 1912."

Some sports writer wouldn't let the world forget that Fred Snodgrass made a mistake in a ball game 62 years before. The writer spelled it out in detail. It was in the World Series. The batter hit a pop fly. Fred dropped the ball, making an error which set up the winning run. The next batter hit a single. The game was over, and the Giants lost. Fred Snodgrass was the goat.

Whispers in the Dark

Scripture: Judges 17:6,12 - "In those days there was no king in Israel; Everyone did what was right in his own eyes." "So Micah consecrated the Levite, and the young man became his priest and lived in the house of Micah."

Observation: On the surface this seems like an unusual story; but as one looks at it, it becomes clear just how common a story it is! First, a leadership vacuum has created a situation of anarchy in the land - everyone decided for himself what was right. Sounds a lot like America in 2010 to me. Second, the religious man, Micah, decides to create God in his image and design his own laws and practices. He will pay to have his own priest and do church his own way. Finally, there is the young Levite. Though called of God, and by virtue of his birth he has a role to play as the caretaker of the things of the household of God, he is able to be seduced by the money, prestige and security of Micah's offer. He becomes a "hireling" and a renegade "priest". In the process he sells his soul.

An Impossible Protein, Succinate Dehydrogenase

      By Stephen F. Larner, PhD

An Impossible Protein
Size and complexity, an impossible protein. Our bodies function through the complex interaction of tens of thousands of proteins of all different sizes and complexities. An important protein class, enzymes, is absolutely critical for life because they accelerate the rates of biochemical reactions and regulate metabolic pathways. An example is succinate dehydrogenase (SD). Despite its intimidating name, it has a wonderful message, especially if you are a creationist. You see, there is no rational explanation for its existence apart from God's creation. SD is membrane bound and extremely ubiquitous. Almost all living organisms use a variation of it, including plants, animals, fungi, and bacteria. Yet, it is one of the more complex enzymes. It is comprised of over 1,100 left handed amino acids (an average sized protein has about 400) combined into 4 subunits (see color code in Figure 1 and 2) in a precise three dimension shape.

There are only 20 different amino acid possibilities for each of these 1,100

-plus positions. In enzymes, the amino acid choice at some locations is not very critical, while at others no freedom of choice is possible - changing one amino acid at a critical site can render it completely ineffective leading to a genetic disease or death. . . .

Where Learning Empowers Minds and Souls...

Dear Parents,

We are very excited with the new venture at the Family Church, The Academy Preschool. We will open our doors on June 1t, 2010. We have planned wonderful activities for each week to celebrate the summer season. In August, we will start a fantastic preschool curriculum with many activities for children ranging in ages from 8 weeks to 5 years old.

The hours of operation will be from 7:00 am to 6:00 pm, Monday through Friday. We will serve healthy snacks in the mornings and in the afternoons. Children will bring their own lunches. Every class will have a teacher(s) and the number of students will vary depending on the age. Our infant class will have a maximum eight babies.

We will use a Christian curriculum called A Beka Book and High Reach Learning.  During the morning, we will have age-appropriate academic activities. In the afternoon, the children will have a resting time, snacks, playground time and rotate through free choices of activities in the classroom.

Worship Through Creative Arts   with Larry Carpenter

"That the moment that one definitely commits oneself, then Providence moves too." W.N. Murray, of the Scottish Himalayan expedition.

It's been my experience that when you are really committed, then not only are you certain that you are doing the right thing, but somehow events just seem to occur to help you. I believe that this is more than positive thinking and scripture clearly backs this up in Psalm 37:4-11.

A) verse 4 "Delight yourself in the Lord; and He will give you the desires of your heart."

B) verse 5-6 "Commit your way to the Lord, trust also in Him, and He will do it. He will bring forth your righteousness as the light and your judgment as the noonday."

C) verse 7 "Rest in the Lord and wait patiently for Him; do not fret because of him who prospers in this way, because of the man who carries out wicked schemes."

D) verse 8-11 "Cease from anger and forsake wrath; Do not fret; it leads only to evildoing. For evildoers will be cut off, but those who wait for the Lord, they will inherit the land. Yet a little while and the wicked man will be no more; and you will look carefully for his place and he will not be there. But the humble will inherit the land and will delight themselves in abundant prosperity."

I find it interesting that a friend of mine with rabbinical training explains the meaning of the word "Shalom", which is used as a greeting and good bye, to encompass this passage: Completeness -whole man / Soundness - soul and mind / Health-rest / Prosperity -uncontainable, overflowing / and Peace - tranquility and friendship.

Life doesn't get any better than that...so, lets live into what and how God has wired us on this journey! When we commit, Providence moves!

Come join us as we grow, Larry

As we approach Spring, I am excited about the possibilities!  Spring, as I may have shared before, is my favorite time of year.  Everything in nature is "springing" up.  I love it!  I especially love it when one day I am looking at a tree and thinking 'this tree is certainly dead,' and the next day it is in full bloom!  Wow!  God is awesome in His ways, and Spring is that reminder to me.  Spring is a season filled with hope.  Now having said that, I must acknowledge that every day God gives me to live is a day filled with hope.  And, if I look each day, I don't have to look far for confirmation from God the many reasons I have to hope in Him.

I think of scriptures such as:  2 Cor. 1:22 that says, "{He} has set his seal of ownership on us and put his Spirit in our hearts as a deposit guaranteeing what is to come; or 2Cor. 5:5 - "Now it is God who has made us for this very purpose and has given us the Spirit as a deposit guaranteeing what is to come."; or Eph. 1:14 which says, "Having believed, you were marked in Him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit, who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God's possession - to the praise of His glory."; or how about Psalm 91:1-3 which proclaims, "He who dwells in the shelter    of the most high will rest in the shadow of the almighty.  I will say of the Lord, He is my refuge and my fortress, my God in whom I trust.  Surely he will save you from the fowler's snare and from the deadly pestilence." Now if these scriptures do not give us a reason to hope, then I don't know what will.  Our heavenly Father wants us to rest in Him.  He wants our confidence, worth and security to be in Him.

Hope for Creation AdOn The Homefront
           by Connie Reid

Creation Care

As the dogwood, redbud and azalea bloom throughout Gainesville, it is a good time to turn our thoughts to creation care. April 22nd will be the 40th Anniversary of Earth Day.  I can remember the first one being advertised on the Ohio State University campus during my freshman year. It was started to draw attention to the finite resources of this beautiful planet on which we live and how we need to care for it.  If we are good stewards of the resources, the earth will be able to sustain life as God intended.

I encourage you to teach your children the importance of recycling, kindness to animals as well as people, about soil erosion, water conservation, sources of energy, and not to liter. Maybe this spring you could plant a few butterfly friendly flowers or a shade tree near your air conditioning unit to lower your energy bills.

On Wednesday, April 21st, our church will host a community wide simulcast of "Hope for Creation". It will begin at 7:30 PM and is a worldwide, faith based discussion on creation care. For family groups that normally met during this time, I hope you will plan to make that your meeting for the week.

Men - Are You In Captivity?

When wild animals are held in captivity they lose their desire to be what they were created to be. WILD! Animals that are wounded and spend time in an animal hospital must be re-introduced to the wild. They become dependant on humans to meet their need for food and water. Their instincts don't stay sharp and they just do not have the desire to be wild anymore. Captivity can ruin the spirit of any wild animal; it is not what they were designed for.

What about you?  Are you being held captive by the things of this world? Do you know have a friend who is? Do you ever wish that you could just unleash the things that hold you back and make an impact on this world for The Kingdom?

The world that we live in will take hold of every part of our being if we are not careful. The pressure to live in a certain lifestyle, have certain things, always be and have the best literally gets the best of us. After that what do we have left for the Kingdom of God? The world tells us that we should be independent and carve our own path to success.

What happened to us? As men, are we living the life that God intended?
