Leaving a Legacy
If the Family and the Church are going to partner together to change the next generation for the Kingdom of Christ then what should the focus of the Family become? What is the role of the Family in partnering with the Church?
The role of the family is to love and demonstrate the character of God through an unconditional relationship. How do we impress on our children the love and character of God? We must first establish relationships with each other that are a reflection of an authentic relationship with God, husband with wife, mother with father and parents with child.
It is critical to establish home as a place where God is central. . . .

A Word from Max
As I write this the events in Haiti are on all of our minds and hearts. The scope of the earthquake disaster there makes this one of the most serious natural disasters in recent world history. I know that we have all been touched by it.
I was so pleased with the response of TFC to the disaster. Immediately we had people mobilizing relief efforts, making plans to go, raising funds and supplies, and organizing prayer events. Many lives have been touched, and no doubt some saved because of your compassionate response. Our ability to respond also says something about our relationships with our mission partners and your response to our annual GIC.
I don't know if you know it or not, but the group of relief workers from The Family Church were among the first people to actually be able to get into Haiti with supplies and team members. While many others were backed up, God provided the grace to allow our team and supplies to arrive. This was in large part due to relationships formed in our ongoing mission work in Haiti.

Whispers in the Dark
Scripture: Acts 5:4 - "How is it that you have contrived this deed in your heart? You did not lie to us but to God."
Observation: From the earliest days of my Christian walk the story of Ananias and Saphira has troubled me greatly. It is a harsh story of deceit and apparently swift retribution from God. But other than motivating me to get that tithe check to the church, what is the deeper significance of this passage for me today? Perhaps it lies in the question Peter asks: "How is it that you have contrived this deed in your heart?" At first glance the question seems rhetorical. But on closer examination I believe the question flows out of Peter's genuine perplexity over the actions of Ananias and his wife. Peter is a man transformed. Through the power of the Holy Spirit he would affirm along with Paul that it was no longer he who lived but Christ who lived within him. In the early church community the reality of the living Lord was understood to mean that Jesus was dwelling in the hearts of believers. If that was true of Peter, how could it not be of Ananias? Peter is astounded and confounded by the idea that Ananias could have a heart filled with Jesus and yet "contrive" in that same heart a deed that would lie to the church. Interesting as well that Peter so equates the Church with the Body of Christ that Ananias' deed was not seen as deceit of the people, but of God.

Taking Inspiration from Nature's (God's) Design By Stephen F. Larner, PhD
Nature inspires engineers with wonders but could they have been produced by evolution's random mutations?
1. Aerodynamic seed: A plant in Java has seeds that are perfect gliders. From the Alsomitra vine it was reported that its seeds that weighs 300 grams can glide hundreds of meters across the forest but are only supported by wings just 1mm (paper thin) thick. The seeds aerodynamics were studied by two Japanese engineers who found the seed's design was so good that it achieves a descent angle of just 12 degrees, a property that has inspired the design of aircraft.
2. Digging clam: Razor clams reportedly "can burrow into the bottom of its native mudflats at a remarkable rate of roughly a centimeter per second" because "The clam digs with two motions - a push upwards with its foot, which mixes the mud grains with the liquid above, and a synchronized push down. This motion creates a liquid-like quicksand layer around its body, reducing the drag from burrowing and dramatically reducing the overall energy used." So "inspired by this principle," MIT engineers built RoboClam. Devices using this principle might help underwater installations, like cables, secure themselves once hitting bottom, and easily detach when the equipment needs to be recovered.

Worship Through Creative Arts with Larry Carpenter
A Godly Perception of Life
At the age of 49 it is clearly obvious to me that life is a journey, not a destination. I have a background in finance which came before music production ministry and if you are like most of us there are certain unforgettable moments that come to mind especially during the holidays when we tend to reminisce.
One very successful gentleman and his wife that I met in the mid nineties while working as a loan officer in St. Louis, comes to my mind frequently. Their balance sheet was a multi-decade story that had "financial genius" written all over it. But, the most impressive thing about our first meeting was not their fifteen profitable corporations. It was his statement that I will never forget; "what we bring to the table is 25 years of mistakes".

Women's Ministry with Rene Cloutier
Love one another for love is of God, he who loves is born of God, and knows God. He who does not love, does not know God, for God is love, God is love. 1John 4:7
Okay, so February is generally seen as the month of love. So. . .. If anyone SHOULD have this "love thing" on right, should it not be the children of the God who is love?
On our wedding rings, Raymond very much wanted the following engraved on our wedding bands - "Each for the other and both for God." And so it was that our rings were engraved. (Can you believe they can get something so long on something so small?) Anyway - nice saying, but for me, I wanted "meat" on this saying. So, being who God made me to be, I am on occasion asking him, "in OUR world, in our home and in our daily lives world, what does this look like - "each for the other and both for God?" I mean why have a saying and not have real meaning behind it, right? And so we dialogue about what that means for us on a daily basis, and this becomes our higher goal for our marriage.

Becoming 'First Century' House Churches Empowered to Disciple
As you may know, we have recently re-aligned our church staff responsibilities, and as of January 1st, I am now responsible for the Family Group Ministry.
I cannot tell you how excited I am about this!! But let me give you some of the "journey" that led me to this place today...
As you know, my heart has pulsed "missions, missions, missions" for years now. That has not changed. BUT, here is what began to happen. As our Missions Team got the Missions Ministry to a level where it was functioning well, 2 things happened. One was the simple process of asking the questions that a leader should always be asking: "What's next, Lord?" We had brought the Missions Ministry to a certain point. Now how did God want us to build upon it from there? The message loud and clear for our Missions Teams continued to be, "This has got to go grassroots. The next step is to mobilize the people of TFC to really live 'on mission' with their lives."

Pie Making:
An America Tradition .
I know many of you are watching your diet starting afresh with a New Year. Still, I could not pass up an opportunity to talk about pie as this Saturday, January 23, 2010, is National Pie Day. I did not know there was such a thing until I read about it in the newspaper today nor did I know for sure that there was actually a Granny Smith that developed the apple that became her namesake. She settled in Australia from England in 1838 and developed the apple 30 years later.
I love pie and it is always well received as a dessert by dinner guests. Several have good naturedly told me I am the only one left on earth that still makes her pie crusts. Of course, there are many of us left. I just like knowing what is going into my food and being able to pronounce the ingredients. Here is an oatmeal crust recipe I came up with over Christmas that went really well with pumpkin pie. Just use the filling recipe listed on the can of pumpkin.
The pie filling here is for a blackberry pie which we often made in Ohio on the farm. One note about fruit pies is to always sprinkle the filling lightly with some cinnamon before putting on the top crust. Cinnamon is a great spice that adds a nice flavor and will help reduce spikes in insulin. The fiber of the oats or whole wheat in the crust also slows down the metabolizing of carbohydrates.
