A Word From Max
Many years ago the great baseball legend coined a phrase that is one of his best remembered lines when he said, "It ain't over till it's over." It's a good line and it is also more true than one might realize...in baseball and in life.
In 1986 Bob Brinley, catcher for the San Francisco Giants, set a major league record with four errors in one game against the Atlanta Braves. By the closing innings of the game he was quickly becoming a major league laughing stock and the Braves fans were ridiculing him with reckless abandon every time a ball came anywhere near him on the field.
However, in the ninth inning of that same game he came up to bat. The count was three balls and two strikes - the last inning of the game. Do you know what happened? Bob Brenley, in the same game in which he set a world record for most errors in a single game, hit a home run for San Francisco and won the game for them with one swing of the bat...7-6.

Women's Ministry

Women's Mini Retreat
This time of year, it would seem that I spend a good deal of time browsing the card aisle trying to find that "just right card" from me to any number of people that I love. We have Mother's Day, Father's Day, grandchildren's birthdays, mom's birthday, friends' birthdays and the list goes on and on. I don't know about you, but just "any 'ole card" will not do. It has to be a card that would appear to be created just for me, to give to that special someone. Most of us, have probably heard the old slogan, "When you care to send the very best, send Hallmark." And how many of us receive cards from those special people who love us and do care to send the very best, in an attempt to convey love, gratitude, sympathy, encouragement and other such sentiments? Are you like me? Do you save all the cards you get? I have shoe boxes full of cards and I have saved only the real special ones; you know the kind you read again and again because the words mean so much. To me, there is only one thing better than receiving a card and that is spending time with those special people face to face. The best kind of communication takes place when individuals are in one another's presence; the benefit being, to not only hear the words spoken, but to also see facial expressions, watch body language and other such non-verbal queues.

Whispers in the Dark
Scripture - Amos 4:4-5 - "Go to Bethel and sin, go to Gilgal and sin yet more. Bring your sacrifices every morning, your tithes on the third day. Burn leavened bread as a thank offering and brag about your freewill offering - boast about them you Israelites, for this is what you love to do." Observation - The northern kingdom people worshipped God at Bethel and Gilgal. Amos is taunting them here, but notice that he is taunting them for carrying out the commands of God: worship, offerings, sacrifice, prayers, etc. These all seem like good things. There are two problems, however, and Amos is letting the people know of them. The first is the motives of their "religion". Carrying out the practices of their faith had become a way to be seen, a kind of religious game, devoid of true love of God. God rejects this kind of false worship. The second problem was that while they pretended to carry out "love for God" they were constantly abusing their fellow humanity particularly the poor, the oppressed, those seeking justice. Amos makes it clear that this kind of behavior is appalling to God.

GO! Missions and Evangelism with Jeff Moody
Pack Your Casket Did you know that the early missionaries to Africa literally packed their belongings for the trip in a casket? They understood that the likelihood was extremely high that their lifespan would be short, and that when they returned home from the mission field, it would be in a pine box. Now, make no mistake, there are some that do indeed face this level of danger, and they willingly lay their lives down. But for most of us, "being involved in missions" doesn't mean imminent death.
Announcement:
There will be a Prayer Vigil for the Welch Missions and for Ecuador, at The Family Church, on Thursday, July 2nd, from 6:30-8:30pm in rooms 124 and 126.

Information - Born to Communicate By Stephen F. Larner, PhD
Communication - child's play. Over the past several months we have learned that information is a fundamental (1) property of life and (2) part of nature's laws, (3) a vital component of our daily existence, and, last month, (4) communication of it requires at least three essential components: a sender; the coded message; and a receiver. We have also discovered that all information systems (1) are mental features separate from the properties of matter, (2) is always based on the sender's will, and (3) is nonmaterial thus sits outside the properties of random evolution. One of the important means of conveying information is through language, oral and written. It is one of the most fundamental factors that separate us from all other animals. We are able to express ideas and feelings, beyond just description of material objects, and can discuss hypothetical matters as well as realities past, present and future. Although animals have been taught a limited number of words (signs) no creature comes close to humans, thus no evolutionary scenario can explain language.

On the Home Front - A Colorful Presentation
by Connie Reid
Food is always more appealing when lots of color is present. It just so happens that having a variety of colorful foods on your plate usually guarantees an abundance of vitamins and antioxidants. So when planning a meal always use some color.
Artist Salad One of my favorite tasting fruit salads offers a great lesson in primary and secondary colors. Soon fresh peaches from Georgia will overlap with our own blueberries and strawberries. It will be a good time to try this "artist" salad. If your kids are helping you, have a color chart nearby. For the primary colors (yellow, red and blue) add equal amounts of fresh peaches and strawberries plus a generous handful of blueberries. Add one secondary color of seedless green grapes; sprinkle with one tablespoon of sugar and gently mix the fruit. I personally think this is a great blend of flavors besides being a colorful salad. Ask your kids what other fruits you might try and where they fall on the color chart.
Watermelon Salad If you are headed to a neighborhood barbeque, you can really make an entrance with a hollowed out watermelon fruit salad. Slice a watermelon lengthwise and put one of the halves in the refrigerator for later use. If you have a balling spoon you can make little melon balls out of the watermelon or you can scoop it out and cut it into bit size pieces placing them into a big bowl. The watermelon boat can be used as is or you can cut evenly spaced triangles out along the edge for a serrated effect. Add the fruits mentioned in the previous paragraph plus some cantaloupe balls to the watermelons balls, three tablespoons of sugar and gently stir. Place it all back into the watermelon, cover and refrigerate or head to your party.

Worship Through Creative Arts with Larry Carpenter
This time of year the first thing I think of when I wake up in the morning is that phrase from a 70's song "Hot time in the summer". Of course you'd expect that from someone who came here from the mountains of Colorado...Ha! Other than that it's being excited about what we've accomplished over the last couple of years and where we're heading. We are truly blessed to have such talented people step up in all of our worship and arts teams and make our weekend services happen. Their "servant's heart" approach is what allows God to work and touch lives each week in a special timely way...lets keep up the good work! Come join us as we grow, Larry
