A Word From Max

It was a little over a year ago when Rick Warren and Saddleback Church asked us here if we could commit to helping them train Christian pastors in India so that the phenomenal growth of the church there could continue. Saddleback Church had put together a three-year training and coaching process for Indian pastors and offered to provide the materials and translations if we could provide the teachers. The process would require us to "take a whole city" and gather the pastors there, providing them with a three day conference every six months for the next three years. After consulting with Pastor Jeff, we agreed that this was a wonderful opportunity, especially since we could work in a city near where we are already engaged in church planting and other missions. Many of you know that I conducted the first of these training events a few weeks ago. We are working in the city of Vishakhapatnam, a coastal city of four million on the Bay of Bengal. We had hoped to be able to assemble 100 pastors for the conference, though we were told that might be overly ambitious. However, working with Dr. Peter Pereira, one of our fine India partners, we ended up with 130 pastors showing up! That, in itself, was an amazing success. The pastors were eager to learn, and hung in there for nine hours a day of my teaching (can you imagine?) and were anxious for more: That, despite temperatures outside of over 113 degrees, and a faltering and at times completely nonfunctional, air conditioning system.

Chldren's Ministry Updates
FAITH is the Core Virtue for June: For we live by believing and not by seeing. (2 Corinthians 5:7, NLT).
Is it that we long for an extraordinary life, one fueled by trust that would astonish even Jesus?
When Jesus heard this, he was amazed. Turning to the crowd that was following him, he said, "I tell you, I haven't seen faith like this in all Israel!" (Luke 7:9, NLT)
Whatever the broad appeal of these stories, faith is, by nature, individual. Each of us chooses to put our faith in something, whether it's financial security, people around us, or our own abilities. But there's only one place where our faith is safely "deposited": in our Heavenly Father. Jesus showed us this again and again. He did it when He taught us to look for everyday evidence of God's faithfulness in the world around us. He did it when He revealed His identity and power through His miracles. He did it when He encouraged His followers to be His witnesses, to tell what they'd seen and heard Him do. He did it when He gave Himself for our salvation.
So, in June, we'll be taking a look at what Jesus taught about faith: trusting in what you can't see because of what you can see. Everything around us is evidence not just that God exists, but that He's at work in our lives and we don't have to live a life of worry and fear. We just have to know where to look, how to spot the clues, and how to collect the evidence.
Please be patient. It takes a few moments to download. (4 pgs.)

Whispers in the Dark
Scripture - II Samuel 9:3, 11 - "So the king asked, "Is there anyone left of Saul's family I can show the kindness of God to?" "So Mephibosheth ate at David's table just like one of the king's sons." Observation - The hand of the Lord was obviously with David in all his exploits. His battlefield victories brought David glory and honor and power. All the people, including David, knew that the Lord was behind all of David's success, but it was ultimately David and his name that was glorified. However, David, whose heart still remained passionately turned to God, desires to glorify God. Note the question he asks - "To whom can I show the kindness of God?" He doesn't ask how he can demonstrate his own kindness, but God's loving kindness. The answer will be in an act of grace, an act of restoring healthy relationship, an act of serving and sharing and humility and forgiveness. None of these things came naturally to King David, but they were all deeply rooted qualities of God. By acting in this way, David doesn't glorify himself, but he brings more glory to God. That is one of many reasons why this particular story has such power. Click Here for Full Article

Family Student Movement
ONE YEAR!!! Our family has been at Family for one year and what a ride it has been. Watching God at work has been tough at times and yet very rewarding. I am excited about the direction of the Family Student Movement and its goal of helping students see Jesus as central to life. This summer has many opportunities to rise up the children and student population of our church to walk in greater understanding and relationship with Jesus. Our students will be participating in BigStuf Camp June 8-12 and Gainesville Outreach June 22-27, along with impacting the lives of children during VBS week in July. Don't let your students miss out on opportunities to grow through out the summer; keep the main thing the main thing by keeping Jesus at the center of everything you do during this break from school. Parents, be looking for opportunities coming at the end of summer for you to grow and be encouraged in your parenting. In this next school year there will be many chances for you to find the tools needed to help your son and/or daughter as they wade through the teenage years. Keeping Jesus at the Center, Jim

On the Home Front - Teaching Conservation in the Home
by Connie Reid
Show and Tell - Your children will be more likely to remember to turn those lights off when they leave the room if you explain to them why it is important and show them the meter. Get a stool that will allow the child to see the meter or if it is in the ground you will need a flashlight. Explain that as electricity is used, the hand on the meter goes around and you are charged more money each time it turns. Have one child tell you each time the hand has completed the circle and have another child drop a penny into a cup simultaneouly, then have them switch. Of course make this age appropriate. If your children are old enough to understand, discuss how the energy is produced in our county and how it gets to your house. You can do the same with gas and water consumption.
Ceiling Fans - Nearly all the homes in this area have a few ceiling fans. They are intended to make us more comfortable allowing us to use less electricity. They have a switch on them that reverses the direction the blades turn. Here is an easy way to remember which way they should be set to turn for the season. Summer is counterclockwise and winter is clockwise. Summer has two consonants which should help you associate it with the" cc" of counterclockwise. Why does it matter? The blades are set on an angle and turning one way will pull hot air up and turning another will push it down. When you are not going to be in the room for awhile, turn the fan off.

Worship Through Creative Arts with Larry Carpenter
Congrats to all the grads!!! It's that time of year again...summer is here and the inverse relationship between traffic and available seating in local restaurants is amazing...ha! It's no secret that living in a college town or tourist community, with its ebb and flow, makes for a predictable year most of the time. And this cycle is the same for most churches with summer being the normal slow period. Between our decreasing college population and family vacations it would be considered an anomaly to keep our current growth curve over the next few months. But if you've read any of my previous articles you know by now that I enjoy bucking the trend. Standard deviations and revision to the mean are very interesting but make for a boring life when God has bigger plans for us as individuals and a church. "Where we meet on the weekends as a corporate body in Christ is just real estate". "We are the church"...let's continue to reach our community and touch lives.
Come join us as we grow, Larry

Focus on the Family Groups by Patrick Callahan
"Jesus said to them again, 'Peace to you! Just as the Father has sent Me, I also send you!"John 20:21
It seems like a blur. . . Friday night, August 29th, the Family Group leaders were excitedly gathering to plan the new ministry year and pray about where God was moving so we could get on board with His agenda. At that time, I challenged each of the ministry leaders to pray about their purpose and to articulate a purposeful plan for life-on-life ministry within the group God has entrusted to their shepherding care. As the formal portion of the Family Group ministry year is drawing to a close, it's time to reflect upon where we are in "serving God's purpose in our own generation" Acts 13:36.
