A Word From Max
With this issue, we begin our new "digital" newsletter. It will be more colorful, interactive, and cost effective. We hope you like the new format. Here are some things to consider that might make the newsletter more useful for you. 1) If you are a person who really prefers to have a hard copy of the material, simply print your copy on your computer's printer. I get several monthly newsletters online that I like to mark up and re-read. I just print them out each month as they arrive. This might also be helpful in households where one person is a "computer" person, but others are rarely online.2) You can forward the newsletter to family, friends, or anyone else who may have an interest. Perhaps only one article or one calendar is important to you. Simply cut and paste that section into a separate file, and forward that.3) We are working on the ability to embed hyperlinks in the text that will take you to additional information, calendars and other items of interest. Utilize these functions when you want to know more, or when space doesn't allow us to include everything you might have wanted or needed. Remember you can always go to our church web site - www.thefamilychurch.net - for many other items of importance or interest.4) Be sure to keep us up to date on your current email address. Do you have spam filters? Be sure to list thefamilychurch.net on your "safe" senders list so that your newsletter doesn't go in the spam file. Change emails often? Please be sure to let us know. Are there multiple email addresses in your household? We are happy to send the newsletter to each email address if desired. Just let us know. 5) We have the ability to accept contributions or articles or information from each of you. If you want to submit an article, or information for publication, please get it to us no later than the fifth of each month for the newsletter that will be sent at the end of that month. Likewise, pictures are great for digital newsletters. Do you have digital pictures of church activities or events? Please forward them to us and we may use them in the newsletter.I hope you will all be patient with us as we learn to use and expand this new format. There may be some bugs to be worked out in the first few months, but in the long run most of you will find the digital newsletter to be a marked improvement over the printed one. I hope you are as excited as I am about Easter approaching. He truly lives, and He is making all things new. I hope you are enjoying your new life in Him. As always, it is a joy to be your pastor. In His Grip,Pastor Max |

Has "conviction" ever struck you as a strange word? It can mean firmly believing in something. It can also mean being found guilty of a crime! Interesting, isn't it, that Jesus, who was full of the conviction of His purpose here among us, was convicted of the crime of claiming to be who He really was? . . .

On the Home Front by Connie Reid
Soon the birds will be either migrating through or coming back to build nests in your yard especially if you have bushes. Here is a great family yard project when you are trimming trees or clearing vines. Make a crude wreath by circling the vine into several loops and then wrapping the next couple turns around the bundle. Then stick dryer lent into one half of the wreath and scrape peanut butter sprinkled with bird seed on the other half. Tie your creation to a branch close enough to a window to watch how much it is appreciated by the birds. The lent will be used for nest building and the food for energy needed after a long flight. Take a little time with your children to identify birds you see in your yard and look up their migratory path on the internet. Get out a map and look at how far they have come. It is a great chance to talk about the complexity of God's creation with your children. Note: If you have a lot of squirrels in your yard, you may need to get creative with how you suspend your wreath.

Whispers in the Dark
Scripture - I Chronicles 4:30 - "The men listed above by name were leaders of their clans. Their families increased greatly."
Observation - On the face of it the tribe of Simeon seems like an unfortunate group. Smaller than most of the others, even their inherited land was a hand-me-down from Judah. They were given a few cities in the midst of Judah and could have lived quiet lives there under the care of others. But Chronicles tells us there were leaders in the clans of Simeon. In fact their names are listed. And due to the leadership of these men, "their families increased greatly." So what were the qualities of leadership given to these men?
First, they had a larger vision and pressed the boundaries of what they had inherited. "They went to the outskirts of Gedor in search of pastures for their flocks." They were not content to live off of the charity of others. Instead they went in search of the future God had for them. Second, they fought to overcome the obstacles in their way. Hamites dwelt in the new land. It would have been easy for the Simeonites to give up and go home. But instead of shrinking in the face of obstacles, they battles their way to victory.
Finally, they cleaned up the mess others had left behind. There were still Amalekites living in the land (who should have been destroyed years before by others!!!) Instead of seeing that unfinished business as someone else's problem - since obviously by this point they could have ignored the Amalekites - they finished the business at hand. The result of the leadership was good, peaceful, prosperous land for the little clan of the Simeonites, and a perpetual place for them and their families to prosper.

Information - Where did it come from? By Stephen F. Larner, PhD Information, a fundamental property of life. It inspires questions like: What is it? How did it arise? What is its function? How is it encoded and transmitted? What is the ultimate source of information, especially in living organisms?. . .

Worship Through Creative Arts with Larry Carpenter
"What luck for rulers that men don't think". . . Adolph Hitler
To be a fly on the wall in Rev Jeremiah Wright's office and hear the "I told you so..." regarding a closer look at our new ruler would make a sobering scene in a new movie. Obviously it won't come out of Hollywood but still it will take a while before it shows up in a PBS documentary, long after the damage is done.
I know, I know, I'm probably the only evangelical church worship guy in the lower 48 that isn't writing about a new Indy Rock praise band. But in the words of the ancient Greek philosopher Heraclitus, as my buddy from Texas would say, "one things for sure, times are a-changin". . .

Focus on the Family Groups
by Patrick Callahan
God doesn't care about numbers; does He? "Aren't five sparrows sold for two pennies? Yet not one of them is forgotten in God's sight. But even the hairs of your head are all counted. Don't be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows." My son Michael is a freshman at The University of South Florida. He's an aspiring sports writer and I am blessed that he seeks my counsel about academic papers that are his works in progress. As a beginning writer in high school, his tendency was to go for bulk; fill up the paper with anything to get the assignment done. My counsel then and now is to make every word count as he paints a verbal work of art. I point out that frivolous and repetitive words detract from your message.
