Trick or Treat Hours
5:30 - 7:30 p.m.
Monday 10/31
Halloween Safety Tips
Kids love Halloween, they get to dress up and get free candy! What a perfect holiday! Give your kids some precious Halloween memories that they'll have for life.
Trick or treating isn't what it used to be. It's not as safe to let kids walk the streets alone. Trick or treat in groups or send a responsible adult or older teenager with them. Have them stay in groups.
There are many ways to keep your child safe at Halloween, when they are more prone to accidents and injuries. The excitement of children and adults at this time of year sometimes makes them forget to be careful. Simple common sense can do a lot to stop any tragedies from happening.
· Map out a plan. Designate a route and make sure your kids stick to it.
· Plan costumes that are bright and reflective. Make sure their shoes fit well and that the costumes are short enough to prevent tripping, entanglement or contact with flame.
· Consider adding reflective tape to costumes and trick-or-treat bags.
· Don't cover the face. Instead of masks, have your kids wear make-up so they can see better. If they do wear a mask, make sure the eye holes are big enough to allow for peripheral vision.
· Think twice before using simulated knives, guns, or swords. If such props must be used, be certain they do not appear authentic and are soft and flexible to prevent injury.
· Use flashlights and glowsticks.
· Secure emergency identification (name, address, phone number) discreetly within Halloween attire or on a bracelet.
· Do not allow your kids to bicycle, roller blade or skateboard.
· Take the long way around. Have your kids trick-or-treat in areas where there are a lot of people around. Don't take short cuts through parking lots and alleys.
· Kids always want to help with the pumpkin carving. Small children shouldn't be allowed to use a sharp knife to cut the top or the face. There are many kits available that come with tiny saws that work better then knives and are safer, although you can be cut by them as well. It's best to let the kids clean out the pumpkin and draw a face on it, which you can carve for them.
· Treating your kids to a spooky Halloween dinner will make them less likely to eat the candy they collect before you have a chance to check it for them.
· Teaching your kids basic everyday safety such as not getting into cars or talking to strangers, watching both ways before crossing streets and crossing when the lights tell you to, will help make them safer when they are out Trick or Treating. Remind them not to enter strange homes. Let them know what acceptable behavior is.
Make Halloween a fun, safe and happy time for your kids and they'll carry on the tradition that you taught them to their own families some day!

Wellhead Protection Program
The City of Alma recently received a grant from the State of Michigan to aid in the development of a plan that will ensure the safety of our public drinking water system. The plan is entitled the Wellhead Protection Program (WHPP) and involves activities and management practices for protecting public groundwater systems from contamination. The program is an ongoing process that will help us have control over our future environement. Michigan's groundwater is used for drinking water by nearly half of the state's popluation. In addition, it is used for irrigation and industrial purposes and contributes to the economy and unique quality of life in our Great Lakes State. In order to safeguard public water supply systems (PWSS), the State of Michigan developed a WHPP which is composed of a set of guidelines that help comunities protect their drinking water. This is accomplished by identifying the area that contributes groundwater to PWSS wells, identifing sources of contamination within that area and developing methods to cooperatively manage the area and minimize the threat to the PWSS. Unlike many programs, wellhead protection is voluntary and implemented at the local level through the coordination of activities by local, county, regional and state agencies. Although the program is voluntary, the City must develop a WHPP that is consistent with the guidelines established by the state. Our WHPP will specifically address the following seven elements: - Roles and Responsiblities - identify individuals responsible for the development, implementation and long-term maintenance of the local WHPP.
- Wellhead Protection Area Delinieation - determine the area which contributes groundwater to a PWSS well.
- Potential Sources of Contamination - identify known and potential sites of contamination within the wellhead protection area and include it in a contaminant inventory list.
- Wellhead Protection Area Management - provide a mechanism which will reduce the risk of existing and potential sources of contamination from reaching the public water supply well or wellfield.
- Contingency Plan - develop an effective contingency plan in case of a water supply emergency.
- New Wells - provide information on existing groundwater availability, the ability of the PWSS to meet present and future demands, and the vulnerability of the existing wells to contamination.
- Public Education and Outreach - generate community awareness in wellhead protection by focusing on public education and the dissemination of wellhead protection information.
The City of Alma has formed a commitee of eight community representatives to address the seven elements listed above. All meetings are open to the public and community participation is encouraged. If you would like more information, please feel free to contact Ron Turner at 463-8346 or visit the State of Michigan website. |
