Citizens can find copies of the plan here. The Alma Planning Commission and City Commission will soon be asking citizens to review and submit their comments prior to formal adoption of the plan. Christmas Tree Safety Tips
Each year, fire departments respond to an average of 210 structure fires caused by Christmas trees. Carefully decorating Christmas trees can help make your holidays safer.
Picking the tree
- Choose a tree with fresh, green needles that do not fall off when touched.
- If you have an artificial tree, be sure it is labeled, certified, or identified by the manufacturer as fire retardant.
Placing the tree
- Before placing the tree in the stand, cut 1-2" from the base of the trunk.
- Make sure the tree is at least three feet away from any heat source, like fireplaces, radiators, candles, heat vents or lights.
- Make sure the tree is not blocking an exit.
- Add water to the tree stand. Be sure to add water daily.
Lighting the tree
- Use lights that have the label of an independent testing laboratory. Some lights are only for indoor or outdoor use, but not both.
- Replace any string of lights with worn or broken cords or loose bulb connections. Connect no more than three strands of mini string sets and a maximum of 50 bulbs for screw-in bulbs.
- Never use lit candles to decorate the tree.
- Always turn off Christmas tree lights before leaving home or going to bed.
After Christmas
- Get rid of the tree when it begins dropping needles. Dried-out trees are a fire danger and should not be left in the home or garage, or placed outside against the home.
- Bring outdoor electrical lights inside after the holidays to prevent hazards and make them last longer.
Remember...
- 48% of home Christmas tree fires are caused by electrical problems
- A heat source too close to the tree causes 27% of the fires.
The annual Christmas tree collection program will begin on January 10th. Trees will be collected on your regular trash day.

Holiday Trivia
Americans buy 37.1 million real Christmas trees each year; 25 percent of them are from the nation's 5,000 choose-and-cut farms.
- Alabama was the first state to recognize Christmas as an official holiday. This tradition began in 1836.
- Due to the time zones, Santa has 31 hours to deliver gifts. This means that he visits 832 homes each second!
- Santa's reindeer are named Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen, Comet, Cupid, Donner and Blitzen. Oh - and of course, Rudolph.
- Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer was written and created by Robert May. May was an employee of Montgomery Ward, & created Rudolph for Montgomery Wards who issued coloring books each year to children at their stores for Christmas.
- "Jingle Bells" was first written for Thanksgiving and then became one of the most popular Christmas songs.
- If you received all of the gifts in the song "The Twelve Days of Christmas," you would receive 364 presents.
- The song "White Christmas" is the biggest selling Christmas song of all-time.
- More diamonds are sold around Christmas than any other time of the year.
- Christmas trees are edible. Many parts of pines, spruces, and firs can be eaten. The needles are a good source of vitamin C. Pine nuts, or pine cones, are also a good source of nutrition. (Who needs a tree pickup program?)
- Christmas became a national holiday in America on June, 26, 1870.
