WESTERN ARTISTRY
The Art of Stampede
As the Calgary Stampede gets ready to celebrate its 100th birthday, a western feeling is beaming with excitement everywhere you look. It's in window art, street signs, flags... even in the lobby of Hotel Arts - albeit with a contemporary feel.
Canadian artist Bruce Pashak elegantly weaves together a western story with a contemporary feel in his painting called "The Caution Horse". This piece is both fascinating and complex, the longer you stare at it, the more you find hidden stories within the painting. The colours tantalize the senses and the textures bring the artwork to life. The striking black horse at the center demands attention, yet it is only one piece of the puzzle. Each image, every stroke, has a meaning. Pashak has a unique talent of leaving all those who glance upon his work feeling wonderstruck. In fact, the moment you enter Hotel Arts, you will be greeted by an enormous painting of a horse for all guests and visitors to see.
Bruce Pashak is a Canadian artist living in Vancouver. He works with a variety of media, crafting refined images into constructed surfaces. He has shown extensively in western Canada and parts of the USA. When asked where he finds his inspiration, Pashak says that "I'm interested in the means, channels, avenues, etc., in which knowledge is transferred from individuals to individuals - individuals to collectives - collectives to collectives."
The Caution Horse has a western soul with a modern backdrop...very much like our very own city of Calgary.
For more information on Bruce Pashak, visit www.brucepashak.com.
Cowboy Music

Charlie Russell & the First Calgary Stampede
Getting into the Stampede spirit? The Glenbow Museum has an amazing exhibit on display of the works of famous cowboy artist Charlie Russell. Back in 1912, Calgary Stampede founder Guy Weadick invited Charlie Russell to exhibit his paintings at the first ever Calgary Stampede. As the Stampede celebrates its centenniary, the Glenbow reunites the paintings from that exhibit drawn from private collections and major art galleries across North America. It's a once-in-a-lifetime exhibition that runs until July 29th at Calgary's Glenbow Museum.

GET TO KNOW OUR STARS
At Chef's Table, the exquisite culinary creations designed by the chefs take on a life of their own. Each dish has a unique personality, a mood that changes with the seasons and a bold taste that comes alive with each bite. The food is brought to life through the talent, dedication and inspiration of our chefs. Their passion for food makes each dish more than just ingredients, it creates a masterpiece.
Chef's Table's Sous Chef, Christopher Barton is a true culinary artist constantly striving for perfection. Chris believes "Why be good, when you can be great?"
Chef Barton was born and raised in Calgary, Alberta. He has a great attachment to his home town and to the Calgary Stampede. In the early 1920's, his great-grandfather, Jack Morton was one of the first cowboy's to ever compete in the Stampede. Chef Barton also loves country music and escaping to the mountains for hiking and scrambling whenever he can.
Chef Barton studied at one of the most esteemed culinary schools in France, the ESCF-Ferrandi Culinary School in Paris. While furthering his knowledge of French cuisine, Chef Barton had the honor of working under the Head Chef Pascal Barbo at the L'Astrance Restaurant. He also had the opportunity to work at the famous Hotel Lancaster. During his time in Paris, Chef Barton learned French, the importance of using the best ingredients and of respecting those ingredients and their flavours. Above all, Chef Barton learned that being a chef is more than a profession; it is a way of life, and a pleasure to create such culinary designs.
"The thing I love most about Chef's Table is that it's smaller, more intimate. It reminds me of Paris, where it feels like your apart of something; it's personal. We're a family here, and there's so much room to be creative" said Chef Barton.
During his time abroad, Chef Barton achieved the 1st place standing at the 2008 International CCN-World Young Chefs Competition in Paris. Chef Barton also won the 2006 SAIT Chaine des Rotisseurs Dinner, in Calgary, Alberta.
Chef Barton lets the ingredients inspire him, to create culinary works of art. His creations are born through passion, talent and a love of cooking...we are pleased to share this divine culinary experience with you.
