On behalf of the staff and ownership of the Hotel Arts Group, I would like to extend our warmest wishes for a Happy New Year.

Although some people might think January is a relatively slow period in our business, we have a range of exciting activities taking place to suggest otherwise.  World Junior Hockey Championships, High Performance Rodeo, Winsport events at Canada Olympic Park, the Bill Brooks Prostate Cancer Ball, Calgary Opera's Moby Dick are just a few of the great things taking place in our bustling city which was named Canada's Cultural Capital for 2012.

In this month's e-newsletter, we highlight some of these events and a few others as well as shine some spotlight on some of the activities taking place at our restaurants: Raw Bar and Chef's Table.

Happy Reading.

Mark Wilson

VP, Hotel Arts Group

An exciting year awaits us in 2012. Not only does it mark the centennial anniversaries of the Calgary Stampede, the City of Calgary Department of Recreation, The Calgary Public Library, The Grand Theatre and the Pumphouse Theatre, there is an array of exciting programming that underscores the diversity of options to explore in our booming city.

Calgary was also named Canada's Cultural Capital for 2012 and the Organizing Committee is working on a host of different initiatives with cultural stakeholder groups. Highlights of their activities can be found online at http://calgary2012.com/.

In addition to their activities, we would like to shine some light on what we consider to be several highlights of great events taking place in Calgary for the first six months of 2012.

One festival that adds vibrant colour to our cultural mosaic is One Yellow Rabbit's High Performance Rodeo. Hotel Arts is pleased to sponsor this event again in January and the line-up is fastastic, eclectic and certain to raise an eyebrow or two. One of the headliners is renowned performance artist, Laurie Anderson, who comes to Calgary to share Another Day in America and Gray Rabbit. https://www.hprodeo.ca/2012/another-day-in-america.

Mexican Wrestling HPRA guaranteed eyebrow raiser at High Performance Rodeo will be Lucha Vavoom as High Performance Rodeo hosts Mexican Wrestling, vintage burlesque and comedy at the Big Four on July 27 & 28. After you buy your tickets at https://www.hprodeo.ca/2012/lucha-vavoom, just for fun, find yourself a Mexican Wrestling Name to fully get into the spirit. Click here: www.gangstaname.com/names/mexican_wrestler.

In the midst of all this fun, One Yellow Rabbit will host Winestage at Hotel Arts on January 28th.   Their annual fundraiser brings together a host of restaurants including Raw Bar & Chef's Table at Kensington Riverside Inn to showcase diverse culinary treats paired with wine from a host of suppliers.https://www.hprodeo.ca/2012/wine-stage.

Picking up on the high adrenaline theme of the High Performance Rodeo, Calgary will host some amazing events this winter at Winsport's Canada Olympic Park. Canada's Air Force will be competing against the best in the world when the Canada Post Freestyle Skiing Grant Prix takes place January 6-8. The best snowboarding riders from across the globe when the Burton Canadian Open ("CANO") returns to Winsport's Canada Olympic Park on January 30 - February 5. Riders will compete in world-class halfpipe and slopestyle courses with rad moves for appreciative crowds. Anticipate a festival atmosphere at the hill and in Calgary's nightclubs when sports turn to fun at nighttime. On its heels, Canada Olympic Park plays host to the Bobsleigh and Skeleton World Cup (February 6-12). On February 19, adrenaline junkies can learn how to luge down five turns of this amazing track. Visit online at

Calgary Opera brings high art to Calgary's cultural scene and is also celebrating its 40th Anniversary in 2012 with three stellar performances: Moby Dick on Jan 28, Feb 1 & 3, La Boheme in April, and Handel's Ariodante in May. http://www.calgaryopera.com/.

Hotel Arts is also pleased to sponsor the California Wine Fair in our ballroom on April 20th showcasing vintages from over 90 California wineries. Proceeds from the event are all in support of Calgary Opera. For tickets, click here: http://www.calgaryopera.com/performancesandevents/wine.php.

If you go to the lengths to dress up in a "Penguin Suit" to see the Opera, why not check out the real thing when the Calgary Zoo opens the new Penguin Plunge. This February, four variety of species - Humboldt, Gentoo, Rockhopper (awesome for Cody Maverick fans) and King Penguins will take up residence in a new polar paradise. Visit the zoo online to learn more:

CHEF'S TABLE AND THE INN  Find us on Facebook Follow us on Twitter View our profile on LinkedIn View our videos on YouTube

The Year at a Glance

Thanks to our many new and regular patrons, Chef's Table had an amazing 2011.  We kicked off the year with a new Chef, Craig Boje, who quickly garnered the restaurant an exciting reputation.  His flair for bringing a modernist approach to classical French dishes, reworking them playfully while keeping their original integrity, has caught on.  Passion fruit replaces tomatoes in a twist on a traditional prawn cocktail, while mulled wine is transformed into gel to accompany a game hen, and our crème brulée is deconstructed and artfully presented.  Creativity soared and service excelled at many well-attended winemakers dinners, including Cakebread Wines, the Hope Family Wine Dinner, the Penfold's Dinner and Re-Corking Clinic, and the Napa Valley Vintners, just to name a few.  Our inaugural Titanic Dinner recreated the scene as it was set almost 100 years ago, and guests dressed the part to try some of the amazing modern twists on this infamous First Class dinner.

The Inn and Chef's Table became the setting where many beautiful brides and nervous grooms said their I do's, and the trend for stand-up cocktail receptions to mark any occasion is catching on.  Carving stations, steaming Irisotto bowls, sushi and prawns, fresh-shucked oysters and beautiful dessert stations really set the mood for a party - add some good wine and great music, guest rooms upstairs, and you have an exclusive venue for a memorable wedding, anniversary, birthday, or corporate event.

It is no wonder that Chef's Table racked up some great recognition this year.  Besides many noteworthy articles including "75 Must-Try dishes" (Where Magazine), and a 2nd place position at the AGC Cooks Competition, our wall of fame is adorned with the following:

Where Magazine "Best Hotel Dining" three consecutive years, including 2012.

Avenue Magazine "Judges' Pick Worth the Splurge"

Wine Spectator Award of Excellence

TripAdvisor Award of Excellence

...and most recently, the coveted AAA Four-Diamond rating, ranking Chef's Table as one of only 3 such recognized establishments in Calgary, a premier establishment as esteemed by inspectors, the hospitality industry, and you, our loyal clientele.  All that is left to say is thank you!  Thank you for your patronage, your trust, and your loyalty .  Looking forward to many great things in 2012!

CraigFor reservations for tickets to multiple Avenue Dinners or information on any of the other dinners, please contact Jasmine Croteau 403.240.9055 ext 248 or jcroteau@redpointmedia.ca.

Below is the write-up about Chef's Table as winner of the "Worth the Splurge" Award in Avenue's 8th Annual Restaurant Awards:

An exquisite five-course tasting menu is just part of splurging at the upscale Kensington Riverside Inn's restaurant. Chef Boje directs a symphony of local flavours and seasonal ingredients that build upon each other and play off subtle Asian notes. Seared tuna is kissed with ponzu. Pork belly is rendered almost delicate in a torchon. Impeccable service in a comfortably modern dining room reminds you of what a true night out is really like. And should the evening acquire an endless quality, you can always retire to a room upstairs and return for breakfast in the morning. 1126 Memorial Dr. N.W., 403-228-4442, www.kensingtonriversideinn.com.*
