Interactions With the Natural World
Dear ,
As you have probably heard, there was another large earthquake in the world recently, this time in Chile. All of the recent quakes have gotten me thinking about how we as humans come into contact with the natural world and are effected by and can affect natural processes. It was underscored again for me recently in researching about the dozens of sinkholes that formed in Florida after a radical lowering of the groundwater table. The delicate balance between what we as humans want and the respect that must be given to the earth and its processes is perhaps the reason that most of us have a job. We balance development with landslide prone terrain, the need for water with the potential for sinkhole formations, the desire for economical foundations with the mandate that the designs prevent failures. The balancing act never seems to end, best of luck with yours! Regards, Randy Post, Owner/Editor - GeoPrac.net

Dozens of Sinkholes in Plant City, Florida
Around 80 sinkholes have been reported since early January in the Plant City area in Florida. The likely cause is cold weather at the beginning of the year in Florida that forced strawberry farmers in the Plant City area to pump somewhere on the order of 10 billion gallons over about 11-days to try to preserve their crops thereby lowering the groundwater table as much as 60-ft allowing the formation of many sinkholes. Read more about this fascinating yet tragic story. |
