Social Media/Networking Poll Results

Greetings!

About two months ago I put up a survey on social media / social networking for geo-professionals. Thank you to all those who took the time to fill out the form! Below you will find a short summary of the responses. I will certainly factor them into my plans to launch a community and social networking portal on GeoPrac.

Happy Thanksgiving to you all!

Regards,

Social Networking Survey Results
Again, I'm very greatful for the time of those who filled out the survey. I was a little dissapointed by the total number of responses, only 27. But I think I had a nice sampling of different types of social networking users and a couple of non-users.

  • 25 out of 27 respondents are currently users of social media and/or social networking
  • Facebook seems to be the most popular service, see Figure 1 below.
Social Networking Services Graph
Figure 1: Social Networking / Social Media Services Used

  •  When asked "Is Social Networking a Waste of Time?", 5 answered "Yes", 13 "It Depends" and 8 "No".
  • Most people visit the sites on their Laptops or Desktop computers (21 and 14, respectively) and 5 use their iPhone and 2 their Blackberry.
  • 20 people said their Company does not have a social networking presence.
  • Only 2 respondents said their employer was supportive of social networking involvement, 16 said they were indifferent and 7 said they were either passively against (5) or actively against (2)
  • Most people use social networking to keep in touch with friends (20), 9 said they use it to develop business leads, 8 use it for career development or job hunting, 7 use it to to find interesting internet content or news, 13 use it for professional networking, and 7 use it to to disseminate information.
  • 8 Respondents have a blog.
Let me know if you have any more feedback about the survey! Keep your eye out in the coming months for a community / social networking component on GeoPrac.
