Interest in Geotech Declining?
Greetings!
I posted a couple weeks ago about some interesting statistics I saw regarding trends in searches for the term "geotechnical". According to Google, those searches have declined by 60% since 2004. We engineers are used to looking for trends in data, figuring out what's significant and what's not. I'm not entirely sure you can draw the conclusion that interest in geotechnical engineering is declining, but it definitely makes you think. Let me know if you have any interpretations. Devil's Slide Railroad?
I found an interesting story about the original attempts to tame the famed Devil's Slide along Highway 1 in California, south of San Francisco. It was done by the Ocean Shore Railroad Company in the early 1900's. They fought some of the same issues that Caltrans has fought over the years, recurring landslides, rockfall, etc. |

Even Sinkholes are Bigger in Texas
A 200-ft diameter by 50-ft deep sinkhole opened up about 75 miles from Lubbock, Texas at the end of last month. The post has a video with a few still photos, pretty impressive and amazingly circular! It's like somebody cut it with a giant cookie cutter. |
