Apollo 11 Lunar Landing 20 Years Later

Greetings!

On July 20, 1969, Apollo 11 astronauts "Buzz" Aldrin and Neil Armstrong became the first humans to set foot on the Moon. One of the first articles I published on GeoPrac was by Dr. Ed Nowatzki, about the geotechnical engineering aspects of the design of the lunar module or LM. He appropriately titled it "The Ultimate Geotechnical Engineering Challenge". If you missed it when it was originally published, I can't recommend it enough!

As I noted in a recent post, I was doubly reminded of Dr. Nowatzki's article after reading about some recent news about the Spirit Mars rover that was stuck on flour-like Martian soil, something some were concerned about with the LM.

Happy Lunar Anniversary!

Sinkholes at the Dead Sea have threatened tourists and forced Israeli (and perhaps Jordanian) authorities to close various facilities and cancel development plans to avoid these geologic hazards. These are not your typical Karst sinkholes. Read more about these interesting geologic hazards.
