| Coating Over Plating |
At RIE the growing trend right now is customers asking us to coat over their zinc plated parts. This is certainly not new to us but as more and more companies migrate towards coated parts for better performance it is becoming more and more common.
The key to increasing the performance of zinc plated parts by coating with additional top coats all depends on the quality and thickness of the zinc plating. RIE will always ask customers to ensure that the plating thickness is at least 2 to 3 tenths of a mil. At this thickness we can attest to 1000 hours of protection per ASTM B117 salt fog test with 2 top coats and 250-500 hours of the same protection with one top coat.
RIE will do an inspection on nearly all orders that come to the docks that call out for coating over zinc plating. On large orders we will randomly pull parts prior to coating to ensure proper thickness and plating adhesion. Visual inspections for adhesion are always done through the process for large and small orders.
No pretreatment is needed on zinc plated parts as long as they arrive without oils, post plating sealers or waxes on them.
The coatings that RIE applies have excellent adhesion to zinc plated parts. This is not the case for all coatings.
Add value and protection to your zinc plated parts by sending them to RIE for additional top coats. |
| Spotlight Customer of the Month
Custom Labeling, Kitting, and Boxing |
Each month we will spotlight one of our customers and their success story. We will change the names of the persons and companies involved to protect confidentiality agreements and relationships. We want you to submit your story to us. If we choose to use it, we will send you a special gift from RIE. If we are inundated with submissions we will include two per month.
John owns a company that specializes in smaller custom fastener orders. In most cases his customer requires that parts are sorted into custom kits and boxed in a certain way. RIE had been coating parts for John for a number of years. RIE was not really aware of the kitting and John was not really aware of RIE's capabilities. A simple conversation was able to solve some problems and strengthen an already solid relationship.
John wrote this short note to RIE:
"I want to thank RIE for evolving as a company to fit my needs. I have recently found out that custom kitting, boxing and labeling has been done at RIE for quite some time but was not something they oversold to their other customers..including myself. The add on service is something that really sets them apart from other companies I have dealt with in the past. I was having logistical nightmares and increasing freight costs and having everything done in one place has been a great thing. RIE even drop ships to my many different customers. Thank you...thank you...thank you, for making my business more profitable and my life easier."
