Ask Dr. Langer... |
"How do I know when to seek emergency care?"
|
Dr. Marjory Langer, Director of the Mountainside Hospital Emergency Department | Most people are attuned to their bodies and know when pain and other symptoms reach a level that requires immediate intervention.
Any time you feel that you have an emergency and need to be seen by a doctor immediately, you should come to the Emergency Room. More specifically, it is very important to come as soon as you sense signs of a heart attack or have symptoms of a stroke. Crushing chest pain, shortness of breath, non-muscular pain between your shoulder blades, sudden weakness or confusion, trouble speaking, or unusual sweating all are indicators that medical attention may be necessary. In addition, high fevers in the elderly and in infants can be emergencies worthy of a quick trip to the E.R.
While there's no easy formula for when to seek emergency care, it's best to err on the side of caution when in doubt and come to the Emergency Room. And if you're not up to driving, I urge patients to call 911 and take advantage of EMS ambulance services which will get you here quickly and safely where our expert staff can take over.
Be Prepared
When an emergency arises, you may be unable to clearly communicate vital information. Complete these steps in advance:
- Make a list of all medications you take regularly including over-the-counter drugs and herbal supplements.
- Keep your health insurance card or provider information handy.
- Have contact information for your primary care physician (and specialist if you have a serious condition) easily accessible.
- Carry "in case of emergency" contact information.
- Wear a medic alert ID if you have allergies or conditions that impact your care.
Dr. Marjory Langer is a board-certified emergency medicine physician and Medical Director of the Mountainside Hospital Emergency Department. She is also a local resident, wife and mother. |
