Mountainside Kicks Off the Holiday Season
Tree Lighting 2010
Last week's Thanksgiving celebrations marked the beginning of an especially important time of year for family, friends and tradition.  To usher in the holiday season at Mountainside Hospital, employees, community members, and the children of Small Wonders Child Care Center gathered for the hospital's fourteenth annual holiday tree lighting ceremony on Wednesday morning.  Later in the day, Mountainside Hospital celebrated the first night of Hanukkah at sundown and lit the first candle on the Mountainside Menorah.

Hanukkah 2010"Mountainside's ability to thrive for more than a century has truly been a testimony to the dedication and support of everyone associated with the hospital," said President and CEO John A. Fromhold at the holiday tree lighting ceremony.  "Thank you for being a part of our 'Mountainside family' and helping us to carry on its tradition as a distinguished health care provider."

Infusion Center RN Pat Pami Receives Care Award
Pat Pami with John Fromhold
Care Award Winner Pat Pami with President and CEO John Fromhold

Employees make all the difference in patient care at Mountainside Hospital.  In order to recognize those employees who inspire us and who set the highest example of standards that the rest of our organization continually strives to achieve, the Care Award has been created.  Each month, Mountainside Hospital employees have the opportunity to nominate peers whom they believe exemplify the values of caring and compassion, and whose unselfish contributions to Mountainside Hospital deserve to be recognized.  It is because of these employees who go above and beyond what is expected that our patients and their families report a high degree of satisfaction with the care they receive at MSH.

The winner of the October Care Award, Pat Pami, Infusion Center RN, received her award this week.  Pat has been providing excellent service at Mountainside Hospital for over 35 years in various departments including medical-surgical and MICU, in addition to her current role in the Infusion Center.  Throughout her tenure at Mountainside, she has maintained an unwavering commitment to her patients.  She is always pleasant on the phone and eager to help with any questions about patient medications.  Pat has a talent for communicating well with patients and their family members, as well as getting to know them. She eases patients' anxieties and makes them feel comfortable with her friendliness and sincerity as she helps them in any way she can.

Pat also maintains an excellent relationship with the doctors, keeping them informed about their patients and won't hesitate for a second to call the doctors if a question or problem arises.  Pat is always looking out for the best interest of the patient.  She is multi-trained in the Infusion Center to work with all types of patients including heart failure, cancer, anemia, and infectious disease.  She also gets called to work in radiation oncology and other places occasionally as needed.  She is helpful, competent and ready to work at all times.  Even her care notes are impeccable.  Working alongside Pat is a pleasure to her fellow department members.

Congratulations Pat!

Learn to Save a Life: CPR and First Aid Classes at Mountainside

A person participates in an American Red Cross CPR training in Washington. Approximately 920,000 Americans suffer a heart attack each year, and nearly half of all fatalities occur before the victim reaches a hospital.  Research shows that heart attack victims have double the chance of survival if they are immediately given CPR. While approximately seventy-five percent of cardiac arrest emergencies happen in the home, most Americans are not trained in this simple but crucial life-saving skill.

This Saturday, December 4, come to the Bayberry Café in Mountainside Hospital to learn how you can save a life using CPR and first aid techniques.  These courses are specifically designed for lay rescuers whose job requires documentation of successful completion of a skills performance or just concerned individuals:

  • Heartsaver Adult/Child/Infant CPR/AED Class

This modular program is designed to teach CPR and relief of choking for adults, children and infants. The course includes instruction on defibrillation (AED usage) for adults & children, barrier devices, the causes of injuries and cardio-pulmonary arrest in children.

9:00 am to 12:30 pm
Fee: $45.00 per person

  • Basic First Aid

Medical emergencies discussed include poisoning, asthma, seizures, heart attacks and diabetic emergencies. Upon successful completion, a card will be distributed.

1:00 pm to 4:00 pm
Fee: $35.00 per person

  • Heartsaver Adult/Child/Infant CPR/AED and Basic First Aid

This class is a combination of the previously described CPR and Basic First Aid courses, with a 30 minute break in between.

Mountainside's interdisciplinary team of heart specialists has developed a powerful program for identifying, treating and managing cardiovascular disorders.  They specialize in the latest minimally invasive techniques, fast and accurate testing and diagnosis, nutritional counseling, weight loss and emergency lifesaving procedures.
