Introducing Mountainside E-Doc: A secure, private new way to communicate with your doctor online.
Mountainside E-DocMountainside Hospital is launching  MountainsideE-Doc, a secure online communication service that will provide powerful benefits for everyone involved in the hospital's continuum of care.

With the implementation of MountainsideE-Doc, the hospital is taking another step forward in its use of information technology to enhance patient care and streamline time-consuming administrative tasks. The secure, HIPAA compliant, online program will link patients with their doctors and medical offices, the hospital,  pharmacies and others in the health care continuum.

MountainsideE-Doc will feature several flexible components that can be activated by members of the medical staff based upon their specific needs and preferences. A Patient Messaging and Health Information Exchange will be available to expedite the scheduling of appointments, the review of test results and other standard patient interactions. Patient communications capabilities will include a Personal Health Record service for viewing and maintaining individual data.

EScript, an electronic prescription writing service, will be available to expedite fulfillment by pharmacies, ensure formulary compliance and screen patient records for possible drug interactions. A Results Management system will provide efficient, reliable transmission of lab, pathology and radiology results from the hospital to physicians, as well as a secure network for forwarding them on to patients or colleagues.

Mountainside is partnering with RelayHealth, a premier provider of web-based medical communications services, to offer this program.
Mountainside shows off its green thumb to help local food pantries

A Lot to Grow Community gardening is a growing trend as Americans become increasingly concerned with food prices, the environment and food safety. This spring, summer and fall, the land directly across the street from the entrance to Mountainside Hospital's Emergency Room will be used for a community garden name "A Lot to Grow."
Community gardens enhance nutrition and physical activity. We are proud to partner in this community effort which demonstrates the role of public health in improving the quality of life in a community. In addition to promoting greater consumption of fresh vegetables, community gardens have also been shown to promote social interaction and community well-being.

Community GardenThe project is being spearheaded by Patrice Kelly, MLitt., Master Gardener of Glen Ridge, and the Mountainside Health Foundation. They envision the garden will also be used as a learning center for the local community on related topics, such as healthy eating and nutrition. To date all of the raw materials for the garden have been donated by local garden centers. Along with these businesses, we are happy to support the 2010 community garden which will provide access to fresh food, promote the enjoyment of nature and provide a health benefit to the community.

The produce grown in the garden will be distributed to local soup kitchens such as Bethel Rehoboth Meal Center in Bloomfield, The First Seventh Day Adventist Church of Montclair Soup Kitchen, The Salvation Army Soup Kitchen in Montclair, and Toni's Kitchen, Montclair.

If you would like to volunteer, please visit www.mshfoundation.org/garden.  Regular volunteer summer hours will be Mondays from 6:00 p.m. until dusk and Thursdays from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m.

Avoiding Weekend Warrior Sports Injuries
A basketball game on Saturday morning seemed like a great idea to get some much-needed exercise and work off stress.  But on Sunday morning you couldn't get out of bed.  Pain has taken over your body.

If this sounds familiar, you may be a weekend warrior- someone too busy working during the week to make time for exercise.  But overexerting yourself on the weekend to compensate for lack of weekly exercise can cause injury and pain-enough to sideline you from everyday activities.

But it doesn't have to be this way.  Your can prepare your body to make your weekend sporting events an enjoyable part of your life instead of one big pain.

Battle Scars

Most injuries occur when you're out of shape or when you overexert yourself.  Typical injuries include torn rotator cuffs (shoulders), backaches, tennis elbow, knee pain, stress fractures, sprained ankles, pulled hamstrings, head injuries and dislocated joints.  Lack of conditioning and overexertion can also cause dehydration and even heart attacks.

A Plan for all Sports

Sports Medicine professionals suggest you try the following tips before you tackle your activity:

-  Follow a balanced fitness program year-round
-  Always warm up, stretch, cool down and stretch again
-  Invest in good equipment
-  Increase your activity level by only 10 percent a week
-  Listen to your body
-  Don't forget water and sunscreen

Each sport puts stress on different parts of the body.  Hiring a trainer for one session to teach you the correct conditioning exercises specific to your sport may be money well spent.

The Sports Medicine Practice at Mountainside Hospital:

-  Provides non-operative treatment of all sports and orthopedic
    related injuries and complaints
-  Is conveniently located in Mountainside Hospital's Harries
    Ambulatory Care Pavilion
-  Serves pediatric, adolescent and all adult age groups
-  Treats acute injuries or long term complaints related to sports,
physical activity, or aging in addition to other medical issues
relating to sports such as diabetes or asthma
-  Offers access to Physical Therapy and Radiology onsite
-  Pre-participation physical exams are available
-  Accepts most major local insurances
