Happy Holidays from Mountainside Hospital
Mountainside Employees Go "Extra Mile" for Breast Cancer Cause
 nurses
Top row left to right: Mary Voytus, Debra Matthews, Sue Brogan, Carol McGrath, Kevin Mc Grath, Terry Dolan, Gloria Meyer-Latella.  Front row left to right: Barbara Files, Carol Quiroz, Diane Heiser, Robin Bernice, Laurie Barbalinardo

A group of Mountainside Hospital employees are going the "extra mile" - more specifically 507 miles - to demonstrate their personal commitment to breast cancer research and call attention to the hospital's extensive breast cancer resources.

While physically preparing to participate in the annual 39-mile Avon Walk for Breast Cancer in New York, 13 Mountainside employees have also been fundraising in support of their journey. The group successfully raised nearly $41,000 through a 50/50 raffle, a car wash and other activities.  The Avon Walk supports research for a cure and medical care for all breast cancer patients regardless of their ability to pay.

"We are actively engaged in breast cancer awareness, diagnosis and treatment at Mountainside Hospital. As a result, we are acutely aware of the life-altering impact it has on patients and their loved ones," said John Fromhold, CEO and President. "We are very proud of these staff members who have demonstrated that their caring and compassionate spirit extends beyond their work at the hospital into every aspect of their lives."nurses

Mountainside's breast cancer program encompasses state-of-the art diagnostic and treatment tools, as well as support programs that ease the physical and emotional toll of the disease. Early detection tools include large field digital mammography which produces clearer and more comprehensive images of large, dense breasts. Treatment, when needed, is provided by a multidisciplinary team of experienced physicians and other medical professionals.

Cutting-Edge After Care

For some Mountainside patients, after care now integrates a novel approach to physical therapy featured in the New England Journal of Medicine and the New York Times in August. A specially trained therapist leads patients through a slow, progressive weight training regimen designed to prevent lymphedema, painful and unsightly swelling that occurs when lymph nodes are surgically removed or damaged by radiation.  The successful use of controlled weight training is a departure from traditional weight lifting restrictions for breast cancer patients that impede their day-to-day routines.

Commendation from National Commission

The Cancer Center at Mountainside Hospital has been recognized with commendation by the Commission on Cancer, an accrediting organization which has awarded that distinction to only about one-fourth of all hospitals that treat cancer patients nationwide. The hospital also has an active partnership agreement with the Cancer Institute of New Jersey.

Radiology Group Broadens Coverage with Additional Musculoskeletal Expertise
 musculoskeletal
We are pleased to announce that musculoskeletal Radiologist, Dr. Romulo Baltazar has joined the Mountainside Hospital medical staff.

Dr. Baltazar is an MRI expert with special expertise in musculoskeletal (msk) imaging.  He is a graduate of Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York and has trained with two of the best musculoskeletal radiologist in the United States, Drs. Javier Beltran and Donald Resnick. Both are highly sought after speakers nationally and internationally. Dr. Baltazar is Board Certified by the American Board of Radiology with a sub-specialty in musculoskeletal radiology.

Many medical specialties converge on radiology and few other specialties interact with such a wide range of medical disciplines. At Mountainside, we are fortunate to have a radiology group that consists of 13 board-certified physicians most of whom are also sub-certified in a variety of specialties ranging from neuroradiology and women's imaging to pediatric and musculoskeletal radiology. These 13 physicians are highly qualified and have extensive knowledge and experience to help their colleagues answer crucial questions such as which patients are really sick, what disease they have, how extensive diseases are and what are the best treatment options.

This addition builds on the extensive knowledge and expertise that already exists  in the radiology practice at Mountainside Hospital and is a part of our commitment to bringing the most technologically advanced diagnostic services to the community.
Sports Medicine Fellowship Program Granted New Accreditation
 Runner
The Mountainside Hospital Sports Medicine Fellowship has been granted a four year accreditation by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME).  The ACGME is a private, non-profit council that evaluates and accredits all physician residency and fellowship programs in the United States.

The accreditation process consists of an on-site review of the medical specialty, a review of the institutional and program requirements as well as interviews with program directors, faculty members, administrators, fellows and other key personnel.

Mountainside Hospital's Sports Medicine Fellowship is a one year program directed by Jeffrey Rosenberg, MD, whom is also faculty of the Mountainside Family Medicine residency program.  First accredited by the ACGME in 2006, the program provides primary care physicians the opportunity for further study and experience in the evaluation, treatment, and rehabilitation of sports related and non-sports related orthopedic conditions and musculoskeletal complaints.  Additionally, the fellows gain "on the field" experience working with local high school athletes at Immaculate Conception High School in Montclair, Glen Ridge High School, and West Essex High School in North Caldwell.  A major focus this year has been the proper identification of concussions and providing the most appropriate treatment utilizing ImPACT's computer assisted neuropsychiatric testing program. In addition, Fellows are actively involved in teaching family medicine residents and students, as well as developing research programs.

Congratulations to Dr. Jeffrey Rosenberg and his colleagues for their outstanding leadership of the Sports Medicine Fellowship Program.
The Center for Sleep Medicine Receives Accreditation from American Academy of Sleep Medicine
 Sleep
The Center for Sleep Medicine at Mountainside Hospital has achieved the notable distinction of earning accreditation through the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM).  The American Academy of Sleep Medicine is a professional medical society for clinicians, researchers, and other health care providers in the field of sleep medicine.  As the national accrediting body for sleep disorders centers and labs, the AASM sets the standards and promotes excellence in sleep medicine heath care, education and research.

To receive full accreditation by the AASM, a sleep center must meet or exceed all standards for professional health care as designated by the AASM.  The accreditation process involves detailed inspection of a center's facility and staff, including an evaluation of testing procedures, patient contacts, and physician training.  Additionally, the facility's goals must include plans for positively affecting the quality of medical care in the community it serves.

Led by Dr. Mete Dikengil, the Center for Sleep Medicine at Mountainside Hospital is equipped and staffed to help individuals suffering from common sleep disorders such as excessive daytime sleepiness, difficulty falling or staying asleep, snoring and sleep apnea.
