Dear Friends,

Our efforts to secure mobility on behalf of DC CPAs and consumers continue since my letter last month.  Earlier this week, I testified before the Committee on Public Services and Consumer Affairs during their DCRA Performance Oversight Hearing. Although the mobility bill was not the main purpose of this hearing, it was addressed in testimony (read my complete testimony HERE).

Significantly, it was also a hearing at which the DC Board of Accountancy went on the record with their opposition to the bill. While the GWSCPA intends to continue to try to work with the Board of Accountancy to find solutions which could allow the Board to support the bill, if you are a DC licensed CPA, and you want the Board to reconsider their position, let them know that this bill matters to you:

The DC Board of Accountancy can be reached by phone: (202) 442-4320 or fax: (202) 442-9445.

And DC residents- it is essential that each individual DC Councilmember hears directly from their constituents on this issue.

Jim Graham - Councilmember (Ward 1)   jgraham@dccouncil.us     (202) 724-8181

Jack Evans - Councilmember (Ward 2) jackevans@dccouncil.us      (202) 724-8058

Mary M. Cheh - Councilmember (Ward 3)  mcheh@dccouncil.us    (202) 724-8062

Muriel Bowser - Councilmember - (Ward 4)   mbowser@dccouncil.us    (202) 724-8052

Harry Thomas, Jr. - Councilmember (Ward 5)  hthomas@dccouncil.us    (202) 724-8028

Tommy Wells - Councilmember (Ward 6)     twells@dccouncil.us         (202) 724-8072

Yvette M. Alexander - Councilmember  (Ward 7)    yalexander@dccouncil.us    (202) 724-8068

Marion Barry - Councilmember (Ward 8)     mbarry@dccouncil.us         (202) 724-8045

We know you care about securing mobility and that we can succeed-but it is going to take the action of many to get us to the finish line.

Stay tuned.

Sincerely,

Kari Bedell

Executive Director

Lawmakers pressing to finish work on 1099 repeal

While the prospect of moving to a single set of global financial reporting standards is very much at the top of CFOs' minds, most of them work for companies that haven't begun to grapple with the challenges of accounting convergence, the latest Duke University/CFO Magazine Global Business Outlook Survey suggests.  IRA Planning Opportunities available under the 2010 Tax Act

On Dec. 17, 2010, the President signed the Tax Relief, Unemployment Insurance Reauthorization and Job Creation Act of 2010 (2010 Tax Act) into law. The 2010 Tax Act affects several big chunks of the tax code, including federal income tax, federal estate tax, the generation-skipping transfer tax (GST) and the gift tax. Most of its changes strongly benefit IRA clients, and many have fast-approaching deadlines that create an urgency to act now. (Financial-Planning.com)

IRS has room to improve e-filing efforts

The IRS still has some improvements it can make to its efforts to get more taxpayers to file electronically, a

new audit found.  The agency currently has a goal of getting 80 percent of tax returns electronically by 2012, but, according to the Government Accountability Office, the agency could be doing a better job spreading the benefits of e-filing. (On the Money/The Hill)

Financial Report of the US Government

Each year, the Treasury Department's Financial Management Service compiles the Financial Report of the U.S. Government, which consolidates the audited, accrual-based financial statements of federal cabinet departments, other specifically designated executive branch agencies, and many independent agencies. The updated website for the 2010 Financial Report of the U.S. Government and the Citizen's Guide to the Report, can be found at http://fms.treas.gov/fr.
