Independence Hall and the American Civil War

Location: Portrait Gallery in the Second Bank of the U. S.
Time: 3:00 to 4 PM

 

 Between May 3 and 6, 1862 Major General Charles F. Smith lay in state inside Independence Hall. A native of Philadelphia, Smith was the highest ranking officer to lie in state in the building during the Civil War. To commemorate the 150th anniversary of this event, join a park ranger for a slide program highlighting the role of Independence Hall during the American Civil War.

 

 

 Happy Mother's Day

Location:Portrait Gallery in the Second Bank of the U.S.

Time: 3 - 4 PM

 

Did you know that Mother's Day was founded by Anna Jarvis of Philadelphia? Join a park ranger for a tour of the Portrait Gallery and hear the stories about the "Founding Mothers" who inspire us with their courage and determination.

 

 

 

 
Open House Neighborhood Tours 

Overbrook Farms Club

Date: Sunday, May 6, 2012

Time: 1 - 5 PM

Starting Location: Overbrook Train Station

63rd and City Ave

 

Each spring the Overbrook Farms Open House Tour and Tea offers visitors a peek inside of magnificent buildings in this celebrated community. From extraordinary private homes to notable historic churches, the self guided walking tour acquaints visitors with the outstanding architecture of this planned turn-of-the-century railroad suburb.

  

This event features a formal tea held at Ivy Hall, an elegant Georgian Revival style mansion with paired chimneys, Palladian windows, and a grand ballroom. Proceeds from this event support the civic and community initiatives of the Overbrook Farms Club.

Queen Village Association

Date: Saturday, May 19, 2012

This self-guided walking tour of Philadelphia's oldest neighborhood features a range of beautifully restored and renovated houses and styles, from 18th century trinities to 20th century homes, traditional to contemporary. The tour also includes two historic churches and two community gardens as well as an annual arts fair in Mario Lanza Park (200 block of Catharine St).

Society Hill Civic Association

Date: Sunday, May 20, 2012

Time: 1 to 5 PM

Starting Location: Old Pine Community Center,

401 Lombard Street 

 

Join us for a delightful, self-guided tour of ten private homes and gardens in historic Society Hill. Architectural and interior styles range from 18th & 19th century to the most contemporary.

 

Dining With discounts: house tour ticket holders can enjoy a 15% discount for dinner that day at any of six area restaurants.

 $15 Adults

 $10 for 1st registered child (6-14 years of age)

 $5 for every registered child after the first (6-14 years of age)

 $0 for children 5 years of age or younger

Building of the Year Tour - June 10, 2012
 
This year's program will feature the Germantown White House, the home George Washington and his family escaped to during the Yellow Fever epidemic in Philadelphia.  Join us for a tour and about the history, and see a curator's point of view.
