Independence Hall as a World Heritage Site March 15 at 11 am | |
Events that took place in Independence Hall created our nation - and changed the world.
Independence Hall is one of only a few United Nations designated cultural World Heritage Sites within the United States. The laws created in Independence Hall birthed modern democracy and led to a Constitution that has been replicated across the world. Now, thirty-three years after Independence Hall's inscription as a World Heritage Site, the National Park Service and the United Nations Educational, Cultural and Scientific Organization (UNESCO) will meet in Independence National Historical Park to celebrate Independence Hall's designation and celebrate the 40th anniversary of the World Heritage Convention.
Superintendent Cynthia MacLeod invites you to join her in welcoming UNESCO Director General Irina Bokova, Acting Assistant Secretary of the Department of the Interior Rachel Jacobson, National Park Service Director Jon Jarvis and other dignitaries for a special town hall program exploring the our nation's cultural heritage and the World Heritage Convention.

The Friends are launching a brand new event called:
The Founding
Father's Day Walk
Sunday morning , June 17th
Come join a famous Founding Father on Father's Day for a stroll across the Ben Franklin Bridge. In support of Michelle Obama's Let's Move campaign, the Friends will be gathering friends and family to walk across the bridge on the South Walkway. Come celebrate the fathers in your life for this fun-filled day of exercise and fellowship. This is an event for all ages, even those in strollers. (Sorry, no dogs allowed on the Bridge.)

Twilight Walking Tours | |
Do you have a desire to learn more about Independence Park? Come join a Twilight Tour one evening this summer and hear about the park buildings and what took place in them.
These free tours are offered every evening at 6:00 pm from mid-June through Labor Day. The meeting place is the Signer's Garden at Fifth and Chestnut Streets. No registration is needed for the Twilight Tours. | |

Speaker Series: March 20, 2012
Christina Dallett Hemphill: Sibling Relations through the Centuries
Dr. Hemphill grew up in Philadelphia and has been teaching American history, women's history and family history at Ursinus since 1988. She is the author of Bowing to Necessities: A History of Manners in America, 1820-1860 and Siblings: Brothers and Sisters in American History. Dr. Hemphill will be speaking on her book, Siblings: Brother and Sisters in American History. The following is a synopsis of her book:
Siblings shows how brothers and sisters have helped each other in the face of the dramatic political, economic, and cultural changes of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. The book reveals that, in colonial America, sibling relations offered an egalitarian space to soften the challenges of the larger patriarchal family and society, while after the Revolution, in antebellum America, sibling relations provided order and authority in a more democratic nation. Moreover, Hemphill explains that siblings serve as the bridge between generations. Siblings thus illuminating the evolution of the modern family system.

Speaker Series - April 17, 2012

Lynmar Brock, Jr: Must Thee Fight
Mr. Brock is a Quaker who can trace his origins back to colonization with William Penn in 1682. His novels are inspired both by his Quaker ancestry and his naval service. He will be speaking about his latest novel, Must Thee Fight, a lively tale of a young Quaker boy growing up during the events of the American Revolution. He is torn by his religion of peace against his desire to fight for his country against the British. He fights in the Battle of Brandywine finding that killing removes any glory particularly with the death of his best friend and cousin.
* Participants are encouraged to bring copies of Mr. Brock's book so he can autograph it after the program

Building of the Year Tour - June 10, 2012
The Friends of Independence is in their third season of offering this great program which gives our members an in-depth look at some of the interesting and historical buildings located within the park boundaries.The first year we looked at the untold stories and architecture of Independence Hall , the second season we examined the Archeology of Franklin Court and 18th century printing and in our third year, we are pleased to offer a look at The Germantown White House, the oldest remaining presidential presidence, the Germantown White House, twice sheltered George Washington. In October 1793, he found refuge during the Yellow Fever epidemic in Philadelphia. Continuing the business of government, he held four cabinet meetings here. The next summer, it was a welcome retreat for him and his family near Philadelphia, the Federal Capital.
Join the Friends of Independence as we explore this historical house
with Park Rangers and learn and the architecture and artifacts on
display with our curator. As an added bonus, come explore the
neighboring house, Bringhurst, which was also newly restored
and opened.
