Thursday, June 23, 6:30-8 p.m.
National Constitution Center
The Encyclopedia of Greater Philadelphia project invites your ideas! This panel discussion, with ample time for audience participation, focuses on the lasting legacy of Philadelphia's role in the American Revolution. How have Philadelphians continued to pursue freedom and social justice, and what does this inheritance mean for civic life today? From the American Revolution to the President's House commemoration, this program will connect history with contemporary issues. Richard Beeman of the University of Pennsylvania will moderate, joined by panelists Gary Nash of UCLA; Richard Newman of the Rochester Institute of Technology; and Michael Coard of the Avenging the Ancestors Coalition (ATAC).
Everyone who attends will have the opportunity to contribute suggestions for the Encyclopedia of Greater Philadelphia, a digital information project currently in its planning stages. Seating is limited, so please be sure to register in advance at http://philadelphiaencyclopedia.org/events. Help Us to Preserve Our History
Independence National Historical Park is more than the brick buildings and green landscape, it is a place to learn about the events that led people to declare their independence and to create a democracy that gives Freedom to All.
Here at Independence, we use artifacts to help teach that story. From the Rising Sun Chair, to the Senate Chamber Carpet and even the cane that leans against a desk in the Assembly Room, all play an important and vital role in the education of park visitors and the Friends have donated and supported the preservation of many of these artifacts.
If you would like to help us maintain the current artifacts we have and acquire new ones, please consider donating to our Dorman Fund. Named after Charles Dorman, a curator who worked here at Independence NHP, it is a fund used solely for the purpose of purchasing and maintaining the artifacts here at the park. To date, over the course of 38 years, the Friends have donated over 1,000 items to the park. If you would like to be part of this prestigious history and help educate future generations, please consider donating to our Dorman Fund.
