Focus On: Giving That Clutter to a Cause
Since January is National Get Organized month, now is the perfect time to clean out your closets and give away what you don't need to those who are in need. When filling those bins for charity, why not think outside the box? Here are some great ways to get rid of your clutter, feel good, and get a tax break all at the same time.
- Nike sponsors the Reuse-a-Shoe program which takes the rubber from old athletic shoes (not just Nikes) and creates play surfaces for children. Visit nikereuseashoe.com to find drop-off locations for all your old sneakers.
- Instead of letting those musical instruments collect dust in the closet, log on to operationhappynote.com, which helps you send them to soldiers deployed overseas.
- At help1up.org, you can find a furniture bank in your area that will pick up your used furniture and deliver it to those in need.
- At collectivegood.com, you can recycle your cell phones and help the charity of your choice at the same time.
- For any of your old computers with (at minimum) a Pentium III Processor, contact theonitfoundation.org which provides computers to low-income families.
- Do you have a closet full of old coats and jackets? Visit onewarmcoat.org to locate coat drives in your area.
- And finally, for those miscellaneous items you don't know what to do with, check out excessaccess.com. They'll match what you have with local nonprofit wish lists.
Now it will be easy to find a good place for those boxes. But, it may not be so easy (or enjoyable!) to fill them. Contact our GoodDeeds consultants and we'll help you organize the clutter, pack those boxes and make sure it all gets to the right charity.
