Saving hearts one life at a time

After our free heart screening at Willow Canyon High School in Surprise, AZ, we received the following email from the Mom whose athlete son attended:

Dear Sharon,
I just received news from my ex-husband that my oldest son, Austin, attended your screening yesterday, April 17. He attends school at Willow Canyon and is on the Football Team and the Track Team. During the test they found that his left ventricle is enlarged at 6cm. His blood pressure was 177/82 and has been high since last summer.

Last summer when he was having frequent headaches and vomiting, no one ever suggested Austin receive any of the tests done at your screening yesterday. They told us he had high blood pressure and put him on migraine medications. Yesterday the medical professionals advised my son to get a follow up appointment with one of the doctors at the screening. My ex-husband will contact his office on Monday for an appointment.

I want to thank you for your effort and your passion to help others....you may have just saved my child's life! Thank you so very much, God Bless You for all you do.
Sincerely, Joy

Thanks to our special sponsors!

Our sponsors allowed us to offer this critical screening free of charge to all 525 student and young people!  We found 26% to need follow-up and 4% to have life-threatening issues like Austin.  We can't say "thank you" enough.  Please support these caring businesses.

Heart Screening a Success

A free heart health screening was offered to all students at Willow Canyon High School in Surprise through the Anthony Bates Foundation (ABF). The painless, non-invasive, fast screenings checked for the existence of heart conditions that may lead to Sudden Cardiac Arrest. Over 500 students participated and most received a clean bill of health.  A few were referred to their doctor for further testing and evaluation.

What is the Anthony Bates Foundation?

In 2000 Anthony Bates was a healthy 20-year old college student and football player in his junior year at Kansas State.  Without any warning or symptoms he suddenly collapsed and died from Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy, a form of Sudden Cardiac Arrest.  As his mother, not only was I devastated, I was shocked to learn that Anthony's heart condition could have been easily detected, and his death avoided, had a heart screening program been available ten years ago.

Anthony was my only child and we were particularly close.

I was determined to help other parents of student athletes avoid the heartbreak I experienced.  To deal with my pain and give some meaning to Anthony's tragic death I formed the Anthony Bates Foundation to organize heart health screenings for youth athletes and provide life-saving education to parents, coaches, communities and school districts.  Read More

As we celebrate Mother's Day this weekend I give thanks for the precious time, though far too short, I shared with Anthony.  It was because of my desire to honor that time and our relationship that I started the Anthony Bates Foundation (ABF). Providing these free heart screenings to discover any heart anomalies in young students will hopefully spare another Mom the heartbreak I have experienced.  Though 10 long years have gone by since Anthony's premature death I still miss him every day.

I appreciate your concern for young athletes who consistently give so much of themselves to their team, their school and their community.  Please join me in ensuring they are healthy and happy by sharing the  ABF mission with others who care about children.
Sincerely,

Sharon
