Greetings!

You are receiving this e-newsletter because of your concern for young athletes' health.  There is a silent killer stalking young people and it strikes without warning.  It's called Sudden Cardiac Death (SCD) and it claims one (1) high school student athlete every three (3) days.  The Anthony Bates Foundation is committed to eliminating preventable SCD.

The world lost a special individual when my son, Anthony Bates, died unexpectedly of Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM), a type of heart disease that caused a Sudden Cardiac Arrest, ten years ago. Only 20, a Big 12 Conference football player and honor role student, Anthony had dreams and ambitions to make the world a better place.  There is no doubt he would have succeeded to make a significant difference had his life-threatening heart disease been found during one of the numerous mandatory medical examinations he had during the years he played high school and college football.  HCM is easily detected with a simple, non-invasive EKG exam, but none was ever required.

volunteers at KSUEasy-going and a natural leader, Anthony gave much to his community at Kansas State University while maintaining impressive grades.  Just days before his death he volunteered to represent the KSU Wildcats at the Riley County Fair Tractor Pull  where he impressed his peers, parents, and business leaders while serving as a positive role model for children.

A Level Playing Field

The Anthony Bates Foundation believes that all student athletes deserve to have access to medical tests that can determine their readiness to give 100% to their school sport, regardless of their ability to afford expensive medical tests.

Over the last ten years The ABF has provided $9.7 million in free or low cost Ultrasound and Echocardiograms to 6078 young athletes.

These students, their parents and their coaches have received the gift of peace of mind that knowing their bodies are healthy enough for the rigors playing sports requires.

Painless, non-invasive testing

Of the 6078 screenings, 11.4%, or 693, were found to have testing anomalies and The ABF Cardiologists recommended the participants have further cardiac evaluation.  Most of these patients did not exhibit any symptoms of distress.  Only by participating in our screening were they alerted to the possibility of a life-threatening condition.

In Arizona 35 ABF screening events were provided and in Illinois 25 training screening events were conducted which provided over 25,000 cardiac tests for young people.  Free or low cost screenings were also done by ABF in Colorado, California, Kansas, New York, Nevada and Washington.

The Anthony Bates Foundation is an all-volunteer, tax-exempt 501(c)3 organization; all donations are tax deductible.

I Don't Feel Bad, Why Should I Bother with a Heart Screening?

~Sudden Cardiac Death (SCD) is the #1 killer in the US~

A High School athlete dies from SCD every 3 days in the US

SCD is the number one killer of women in the US

SCD claims the lives of over 450,000 Americans each year

Early detection saves lives and provides peace of mind!

Anthony had a heart that was 3 times the normal size due to Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM), a heart condition that causes Sudden Cardiac Arrest.  One would think that this would have been detected in school mandated annual physicals but it wasn't because his only symptom occurred on the day his heart stopped.

Most schools mandate an annual routine medical examination for students involved in their sport teams.  Rarely do these routine exams include screening for heart abnormalities even though hundreds of students collapse, and often die, on their field each year from their heart conditions.  Many students lack adequate healthcare insurance to pay for EKG (typically $500) or an ultrasound test (typically $1,500).  Whereas the Anthony Bates Foundation provides these tests to your students and community for a small donation and often free.

The Center for Disease Control data indicates that SCA is a silent, symptom-less killer, stating in their 2006 Report that 7,000 to 14,000 children die each year from Sudden Cardiac Arrest and almost half (over 36%) of these young deaths are from HCM. A recent 2010 study in Kansas schools showed that many of the KS student deaths could have been preventable with the non-invasive tests of EKG and EchoCardiograms.

AEDs - When an Arrest Happens

When a Sudden Cardiac Arrest occurs there is no time to waste.  Immediate medical response is critical to survival.  That is why The Anthony Bates Foundation has donated over a dozen Automatic External Defibrillators (AEDs) to schools hosting heart screenings.  These include:
2010 - Willow Canyon HS; Valley Vista HS, both of Surprise, AZ
2009 - Salpointe Catholic HS, Tucson, AZ; Mesa HS, Mesa, AZ; Barry Goldwater HS, Glendale, AZ; Manitou Springs HS, Manitou Springs, CO; Lewis Palmer HS, Monument, CO
2008 - Deer Valley HS, Glendale, AZ; Manhattan HS East, Manhattan, KS
2007 - Peoria Unified School District, Glendale, AZ; Rincon HS, Tucson, AZ
2006 - Estrella Foothills HS, Goodyear, AZ; Blue Valley HS, Randolph, KS
2005 - Tucson Magnet HS, Tucson, AZ
2004 - Peoria HS, Peoria, AZ

Dear Friend, AnthonyandGrammy

Though 10 years have passed, Anthony's grin and teasing, light hearted manner are fresh in my mind.  I sincerely hope no other parent will experience the tragic pain of losing a child.  It is so important to have teenagers, especially those that play sports, screened for possible heart conditions.  The stress playing sports puts on their young bodies is significant and every precaution needs to be taken to ensure they are healthy.

In my son's honor The Anthony Bates Foundation offers free and low cost heart screenings throughout the United States.  Please check this newsletter for the dates of one nearest to you or contact us for "Friends of ABF" hosting screenings across the country. The life saved could be someone you know. And remember to hug and cherish your child daily because they leave your nest much too soon.

Sincerely,

Sharon
