Saving hearts one life at a time
Jack was a natural athlete, powerful and talented at every sport but especially basketball. As a high school freshman, he was chosen for the varsity team and started most games. Several games were won by his 3 point swisher at the buzzer. When he was only a junior he was recruited by Duke, Ohio State and Purdue, as well as by NBA teams. But whether he would even play in his senior high school year was questionable. Unbeknownst to his coaches and parents, Jack was being stalked by a silent killer. Read More

The Tragic Reality
Every three days, another "perfectly healthy" child athlete dies from Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) while playing sports, marching with the band, or even following a physical education class. In 2000 Anthony Bates was a healthy 20-year old college student and football player in his junior year at Kansas State. Without any warning or symptoms he suddenly collapsed and died from Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy, a form of Sudden Cardiac Arrest. As his mother, not only was I devastated, I was shocked to learn that Anthony's heart condition could have been easily detected, and his death avoided, had a heart screening program been available ten years ago.
Anthony was my only child and we were particularly close.
I was determined to help other parents of student athletes avoid the heartbreak I experienced. To deal with my pain and give some meaning to Anthony's tragic death I formed the Anthony Bates Foundation to organize heart health screenings for youth athletes and provide life-saving education to parents, coaches, communities and school districts.
