One of the bills recently passed by the NH House and Senate is SB 120, an act relative to alcoholic beverages advertising restrictions. Referred to as the "Happy Hour" bill, this legislation removes the state prohibition of an on-premises licensee from promoting "happy hour" specials on exterior signage.
The bill specifically states:
- "advertising of liquor or beverages shall be consistent with the spirt of public health or safety"
- "licensees may advertise liquor and beverage prices separately from any other advertisement or promotion"
This matter added to the current law, as stated above, may be revoked upon local control. According to SB 120:
"...if the legislative body of a city or town adopts a provision prohibiting exterior signs or signs in view of any public way promoting the sale of liquor or beverages at redced prices by an on-premise licensee, such signs shall not be permitted in that city or town.'
New Futures of New Hampshire is sponsoring an advocacy effort to establish the prohibition of "happy hour" advertising at the local levels. Click here for their action toolkit.
