June is Home Safety Month

Source: Home Safety Council

Ask Americans where they feel safest and most will say their own home. However, unintentional injuries in the home result in nearly 21 million medical visits on average each year. The Home Safety Council dedicates the month of June - Home Safety Month - to educate and

empower both families and businesses to take actions that will make homes safe.

"We hope to bring attention to the serious problem of preventable home injuries and its leading causes: slips and falls, poisonings and fires and burns," says Meri-K Appy, president of the Home Safety Council. "Just a few simple steps can dramatically reduce the dangers in most homes and may even make a lifesaving difference."

Throughout Home Safety Month, the Home Safety Council encourages the public to consider their home's danger areas and take some simple steps to minimize their risk from potential injuries, or even death. Read more.

Bear Sighting in Derry

Buckle Bear and Vince recently helped CATS youth members conduct a seat belt observation survey at the Walmart in Derry.  With the help of these two assistants, the NH Highway Safety Agency, and the generous support of Walmart, youth members were able to collect data about seat belt use and provide information to shoppers.

What do you think the youth observed?

Take this quick quiz to test your knowledge on actual seat belt use in greater Derry. Walmart Parking Lot Observation

A self-report seat belt use survey was administered by CATS to teens at the end of May. It is available to take until June 15th. As of June 1st what do you think teens reported observing about the seat belt use of their parents and friends?  Take the quick quiz to find out. Self-Report Survey Results

Have you signed the pledge?

Do you wear a seat belt every time you travel in a vehicle? Do you wear one most of the time and want to try harder to wear one all the time and set a good example for youth? Sign the CATS pledge.  Go to catsnh.org/newsevents/seatbeltpledge.html  and submit your name and town to be listed on our pledge page.

Making a Difference

Korryn Lemay, a CATS youth member, attended the First Annual Youth Summit at the American Red Cross in Concord last month. In addition to hearing from the Red Cross speakers, Korryn met youth from across the state, and participated in teambuilding activities.

"I left the summit feeling so inspired that everyone can make a difference in their community," says Korryn. "We can all be change agents by working together as a team."

The CATS youth members meet weekly and conduct activities such as the seat belt observation or Buyers Beware Sticker Shock.  Contact Kaitlyn Clarke to learn more.

Help Your Teen Have a Safe Summer

Hanging out with friends, driving to the beach, summer barbecues, and boy meets girl - ingredients to a standard summer for many teens.  Sometimes other things are added to the mix like underage access to alcohol, lack of matured driving experience, and unmediated influence by peers and media. These added ingredients can lead to situations that are unsafe for your teen and the general public such as reckless driving or teen dating violence.

Reckless Driving Prevention

Speak up or else.  If you're riding with friends and you don't feel safe you need to speak up because car crashes are the number 1 killer of teens and young adults. Go to speakuporelse.org
