May 2011

Dear Friend of the CATS Community,

Sue Centner

Thanks to everyone who promoted and participated in the April 30th DEA prescription drug take-back.  According to the DEA 4,020 pounds of unused or expired medications were turned in at 87 locations throughout NH. The event held last September collected 2,479 pounds.  What an increase!

Are you looking for a family friendly outdoor activity?  Take a walk with the Derry Conservation Commission. Guided nature walks are offered monthly. Learn more.

Also, are you an active senior or do you know one?  Derry Parks & Recreation and the Derry Human Services Department are surveying senior citizens in order to better provide programs and activities.  The print survey is available on the CATS homepage. Click on the Derry Parks & Recreation logo in the right margin, download the Word document, complete and return.

Thank you for your continued interest in and support for CATS.  Please contact us if you have questions or would like to get involved.

Stay informed and stay active!

Best regards, Sue

May 15th through 22nd is Buckle Up NH Month

Visit www.bunh.org to learn more.

Designed to encourage increased seat belt and child safety seat use, Buckle Up NH week activities include: a kick-off event at the Steeplegate Mall in Concord on Saturday May 14; Coalition members appearing on NH radio talk shows; electronic road sign messaging; child passenger safety seat checks; presentation of the "Room to Live" seat belt educational program; and use of the Coalition's logo in automotive sale ads throughout the state!

Seat belts do reduce the risk of death and serious injury when motor vehicle crashes occur. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), seat belts save more than 13,000 lives each year. Read more.

  • Town of Derry issues Buckle Up Derry Week proclamation for week of May 15th to May 21st.
  • CATS youth members and staff will conduct seatbelt observation surveys during this week.
  • Take our anonymous 5-minute Seat Belt Use Survey.

May is National Bicycle Safety Awareness Month

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 51,000 pedalcyclists were injured in motor vehicle traffic crashes in 2009.  Everyone has a responsibility to share the road responsibly - including bicyclists.  This is especially important in communities that do not have an extensive bicycle path or lane network beyond recreational use.  For individuals bicycling to work or school they must often use the roadway.

Bicycles in the roadway are considered vehicles. Bicyclists ages 10 and over should bicycle in the same direction as other traffic and follow the same rules.  Obey traffic signs and signals at intersections.  Yield to pedestrians.  Use hand signals to indicate a change of direction.  When driving a bicycle at night make yourself visible.  Wear reflective gear and make sure your bicycle has a headlight and rear reflector or light. Don't forget your helmet!  A properly fitting bicycle helmet can save your head!

Operation Military Kids Summer Camp

UNH Cooperative Extension's Operation: Military Kids (OMK) Program has rolled out its offering of four Tour of Discovery camps for military children and families.  Programs are open to all branches of the military, including Active Duty, National Guard, and Reserves.

Operation: Military Kids is a partnership of Army Child & Youth Services, 4-H National Headquarters/USDA, and University of New Hampshire Cooperative Extension.

OMK events are wonderful opportunities for New Hampshire's 4,100+ geographically-dispersed children in military families. In the Tour of Discovery camp settings, youth are able to make new friends, reconnect with kids they have already met, and share important time with young people having similar life experiences as a military kid.

Overnight youth camps "Reel in the Fun" (fishing), "Capture Your Adventures" (photography), and "Food, Fitness, and Fun" (healthy lifestyles) will be offered throughout New Hampshire.  These are open to all military kids from ages 10 to 18, with only a nominal $15 registration fee - there is no other cost to attend these camps!

Space is limited, and camps are sure to fill up fast. For more information go to the website or call 603-862-0876.

"Red Ribbon Week" Tulips in Bloom

Students at Gilbert H. Hood Middle School in Derry pose with their "Red Ribbon Week" tulips.  Students planted bulbs in October to celebrate "Red Ribbon Week", a national event to commemorate the life of slain DEA agent Enrique Camarena and for young people to pledge to remain alcohol and drug free.
