Media Power Youth wants to create a pool of certified facilitators to respond to the growing interest statewide in their youth workshops.

1) The health-focused media literacy training focuses on media literacy as an intervention for at risk behaviors and the empowerment of youth in promoting healthy messages.  Candidates should have a background in health, prevention, and youth programming or media literacy. The prevention topic is typically  chosen by the organization sponsoring the youth event and might include substance use, violence prevention, bullying, cyber-bullying, body image, healthy eating/active living as examples.

2) The health-focused media production training focuses on pre-production, production, and post-production of a youth created media messages. These candidates will have a background in media production, (film, video and other types of media), youth facilitation experience and possibly health, and media literacy.

Working as a team, health and media facilitators will be qualified to co-facilitate Media, Power & YOU and Media, Power & YOU in Action workshops. The participants, whether with a health or media background will:

1) gain a solid understanding of health-focused media literacy training,

2) an ability to facilitate activities that teach these same concepts to youth, and

3) help youth in the creation of healthy, pro-social messages.

Applicants will need to fill out an application to take part in the full day training. After training, each participant will then co-facilitate up to two sessions with a current facilitator, take part in evaluation,  and pass a skills and information assessment. Once certified, a facilitator will be eligible to facilitate/co-facilitate youth workshops contracted through Media Power Youth, be compensated per assignment, gaining experience as a media literacy educator while contributing to the prevention of at risk-health behaviors and promotion of healthy choices. There will be an annual certification process in order for a facilitator to update this/her skills and knowledge.

Contact Christine Sjolshagen for more information and an application. Applications should be in by May 6.  Christine Sjolshagen c.sjolshagen@mediapoweryouth.org  603-222-1200 will be happy to answer questions.
