January 2011

Dear Friend of the CATS Community,

Sue Centner
Happy new year to all.  It looks like winter is officially with us. The winter weather has already postponed one event for Derry parents.  A Bullying and Cyber-Safety Presentation at West Running Brook Middle School is rescheduled to next Wednesday evening, January 19th from 6:30 to 8:00 PM. This presentation is sure to be informative.  Parents can call (603) 432-1210 for more information.

Recent reports discuss the effects of alcohol advertising on youth.  The Super Bowl is just a few weeks away and for some people the commercials are just as important to watch as the game.  CATS will be sending out a Super Bowl update next week.  In the meantime you may enjoy visiting the Center on Alcohol Marketing and Youth at Johns Hopkins or the Marin Institute to learn more.

I invite everyone to participate in the Campaign for Safe Homes & Communities.  Let people know why a safe community is important to you.  Just follow the steps provided on the campaign page.

Best regards, Sue Centner

The Derry Cooperative School District and Derry Police Department rescheduled the Bullying and Cyber Safety Presentation to
January 19th from 6:30 to 8:00 PM
for parents only at West Running Brook cafeteria.

Call 432-1210 for more information.

SAMHSA Releases Report

Recent data from SAMHSA indicate that 45.1 million adults (19.9 percent) in the United States had mental illness in the past year. Of those, nearly 20 percent of adults (8.9 million) also had a substance use disorder.

The 170-page report, Results from the 2009 National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH): Mental Health Findings, indicates that 11 million adults (4.8 percent) had serious mental illness (SMI)-a diagnosable mental disorder that substantially interfered with or limited one or more major life activities-in the past year.

In many cases, those experiencing mental illness-especially those with serious mental illness-also had a substance use disorder.

The definition of a "substance use disorder" is explained in the report as abuse of or dependence on alcohol or an illicit drug.

Anti-Bullying Resource

The Department of Justice's Civil Rights Division released a video that focuses on stopping bullying and harassment of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) youth, as well as other youth who do not conform to traditional expectations about gender roles or appearance. The video is part of the Division's "It Gets Better" project, in which LGBT adults and straight allies share experiences to show youth that life gets better after high school.

The video features DOJ employees, who share stories of their own experiences with bullying and harassment and provide personal messages of support to youth. It emphasizes that DOJ is committed to ending bullying and harassment in schools, and highlights the Department's authority to enforce laws that protect students from bullying because of sexual orientation or gender stereotyping.

Amber Alerts Now Distributed on Facebook

The National Center for Missing & Exploited Children has partnered with Facebook to distribute AMBER Alerts to its members.  This will expand the reach of these important, live-saving alerts.

The AMBER Alert system began 15 years ago in Arlington, Texas, when local broadcasters joined with law enforcement in the aftermath of Amber Hagerman's abduction and murder, and it has evolved to include law enforcement agencies, broadcasters, transportation agencies, the wireless industry, and others who have joined with us to expand the reach of AMBER Alerts. Since then the AMBER Alert program has helped find and safely recover 525 abducted children.

The new Facebook pages will include one main page as well as 53 local pages, one for each of the 50 states plus the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands.  By signing up to become a "fan" of the appropriate page, Facebook users can receive AMBER Alerts issued in their regions.

What is "Be the Wall NH"?

"Be the Wall" is a successful social marketing campaign developed by the Florida Office of Drug Control and the Florida Department of Children & Families, Florida Youth Delegation and Drug Free Charlotte.  The campaign empowers parents to "be the wall between teens and alcohol." "Be the Wall NH" was adopted by members of Allies in Substance Abuse Prevention (ASAP) to send the message to parents in New Hampshire.  Rockingham County has over 33,000 youth between the ages of 10-20, and our prevention experts and community members are dedicated to impacting all of those youth in a positive way by helping to reduce substance abuse.  Join us and share the message!

We encourage parents to talk with their teens regularly, check out www.bethewall.org for a fun and interactive parent toolkit!  If you have any questions please contact Allies in Substance Abuse Prevention at 603.436.5554 x115 or cpcjcoordinator@uwgs.org.
