Dear Friends of the CATS Community,
As we begin another new school year I want to welcome you to our new edition of Safe Homes & Communities. Safe Homes & Communities will be distributed monthly to members of our Safe Homes Network for parents and guardians, coalition members, and all friends and supporters. Please forward it to anyone you think may be interested. An electronic archive, accessible from our website, will be available soon.
We are also in the midst of researching production costs for a print newsletter with the hope of increasing distribution throughout the community.
Saturday, October 24th is the 14th Annual Walkathon at MacGregor Park in Derry. Join us for this 3-mile walk to raise awareness of substance abuse issues among youth and support Red Ribbon Week! Registration starts at 9:30 AM and the walk begins at 10:00 AM followed by a cookout. This year's walk will also feature a CATS Open House, Red Ribbon Week activities, NH Liquor Enforcement Mobile Command Center and more! Go the Events page of the CATS website for more information. (Content will be posted by Monday, 9/14.)
CATS wishes everyone a safe and happy school year.

CATS Receives Drug Free Communities Grant
(Washington, D.C.) - Gil Kerlikowske, Director of the Office of
National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP), announced the awarding of $21
million in new Drug Free Communities (DFC) grants to 161 communities
across the country. Community Alliance for Teen Safety is one of the
recipients.
"The Drug Free Communities Support Program bolsters
individuals and groups across the Nation that are improving their
communities by preventing drug abuse," said Substance Abuse Mental
Health Services Administration Acting Administrator, Eric Broderick.
"SAMHSA is honored to play a role in this innovative program, which has
done so much to promote well-being, hope and feelings of empowerment
among so many young people."
Gil Kerlikowske, Director of the
Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP) and President Obama's
"Drug Czar," said, "Evidence shows that communities receiving DFC
funding have lower instances of youth using tobacco, alcohol and
marijuana."
The Drug Free Communities program is directed by the
White House Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP) in
partnership with the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services
Administration (SAMHSA). The DFC program provides grants of up to
$625,000 over five years to community coalitions that facilitate
citizen participation in local drug prevention efforts. Coalitions are
comprised of community leaders, parents, youth, teachers, religious and
fraternal organizations, health care and business professionals, law
enforcement, and the media.
The 161 new grantees were selected
from 417 applicants through a competitive, peer-reviewed process. To
qualify for matching grants, all awardees must have at least a
six-month history of working together on substance abuse reduction
initiatives, have representation from 12 specific sectors of the
community, develop a long-term plan to reduce substance abuse, and
participate in the national evaluation of the DFC program.
The
DFC program was created by the Drug Free Communities Act of 1997, and
was reauthorized by Congress in 2001 and 2006. Since 1998, ONDCP has
awarded approximately 1,500 DFC grants to local communities in all 50
states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, Palau, Guam, American
Samoa and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Community Leadership Initiative
The New Futures Community Leadership Initiative(CLI) supports the goals
of New Futures to reduce underage alcohol problems and increase access
to treatment in New Hampshire through the development of a state-wide
network of advocates, referred to as Leadership Partners.
CLI identifies individuals who are concerned about these issues
in their communities and throughout the state, and extends an
invitation to join other like-minded, yet diverse individuals in
advocating for change.
Participation in CLI begins with attendance at a one-day
leadership retreat designed to provide information, enhance skills, and
empower individuals to take action. A particular focus of the
leadership retreat is educating participants on the New Hampshire
Legislature, the legislative process, and effective advocacy. A basic
belief of CLI is the power of a single individual to impact public
policy.
To learn about the Community Leadership Initiative, please call
