Safe Homes Network News
COMMUNITY ALLIANCE FOR TEEN SAFETY

March 2009
Dear Safe Homes Parents,

In the State of New Hampshire it is illegal to provide alcohol to minors no matter what the circumstances.  NH's party host liability law, RSA 644:18 Facilitating a Drug or Underage Alcohol House Party, holds "hosts" of parties responsible for the actions of underage participants and can result in fines and/or jail time. Members of our youth advisory board will be helping to coordinate a "Sticker Shock" campaign this May.  Working under adult supervision and with participating merchants, youth will place "Buyers Beware" stickers on cases of beer and other alcoholic beverages in retail stores.  This campaign is endorsed by the NH Bureau of Liquor Enforcement.  Please contact CATS if you would like to participate in the activity as a supervising parent.

Best regards,

Sue Centner, Director

Safety on the Internet

Whatever your age, the Internet is a great place to hang out. It's not only fun, but it lets you keep in touch with friends and family and provides an enormous amount of information. There are lots of great educational sites as well as places to keep up with your favorite hobbies, music, sports, and much more. If you're a parent or guardian, talk to your children about "the Net." If you need to learn more, ask your kids. You'll learn from each other - if not about the Internet, then about life in general, how to make good decisions, and how to look at information critically.

If you're the parent or guardian of a teenager, you may feel teens don't need the same restrictions and controls as younger kids. You may be right, but just because they're older doesn't mean they're out of danger. Teenagers are actually more likely to get into trouble online than younger children. Teens are more likely to explore; they're more likely to reach out to others besides their peers; and, sadly, they're more often preyed upon as victims by child molesters and other exploiters.

Start the Conversation
  • In conversations with your teen about drugs, be sure to include prescription drug abuse and why it's harmful. Tell them that taking prescription or over-the-counter (OTC) drugs without a doctor's approval and supervision can be a dangerous-even deadly-decision. Dispel the myth that these drugs are less harmful than street drugs because they are available through a doctor or at the local drug store.
  • If you hear about another teenager getting caught abusing prescription drugs, calmly approach your teen about it. It's important to not react in any way that cuts off further discussion.
  • Be flexible about when you talk, but not about whether you talk.
  • Remember: silence isn't golden. It's permission.

For more information on teenage drug abuse, and for additional ideas on talking with kids about drugs and alcohol, visit timetotalk.org, a website of the Partnership for a Drug Free America. Remember, as a parent, the things you say and do have a large influence on the decisions your child makes-especially when it comes to drugs or alcohol.

Community Alliance for Teen Safety is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization devoted to substance abuse prevention and the reduction of teen risk behaviors.
